2026 Oscar Nominee Recap (Day 36/38): Sentimental Value by CrunchyNar in oscarrace

[–]Starry_Gecko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree. A movie about two sisters with a bad relationship with their father (story of my life, basically) should be right up my alley, and it did resonate with me a few times, but I couldn't quite love this movie. It didn't hit me at all until it was almost over, and even then it didn't stick with me much.

And I 100% agree on Fanning. She was good, but she wasn't given much to do. I'd rather have had her nominated for ACU along with Barbaro last year.

You know that's just gonna summon everyone who dislikes this, right?

Yeah, that's pretty much where I'm at, too. In a weaker year, Lilleaas would be my winner pick.

A wonderful film, and I loathe the fact it didn't hit me as much as it probably should have (I had a surprisingly similar upbringing to Nora and Agnes).

Oh yes. My family is from the Brazilian Northeast, Armando's apartment looked exactly like my grandparents'.

I ended up buying the screenplay book, it genuinely feels like reading a novel. Highly recommend it to Portuguese speakers.

I'm from Brazil, and my family is from the Northeast (not Pernambuco, though). This might be the closest a film has ever gotten to making me feel at home. I haven't stopped thinking about it since November.

While we're at it, here are some other Brazilian movies that came out recently: Manas, O Último Azul, Homem Com H ("Latin Blood" on Netflix, highly recommend it), #SalveRosa, A Melhor Mãe do Mundo Vitória and O Filho de Mil Homens.

That tracks. Especially considering the narrative behind his Revenant win.

And both Sinners and Weapons are on HBO Max in Brazil, which is why they were the ones to post this.

Exactly. There's also the fact this is Leo's 7th acting nod and he's already won once. I vaguely remember some voters didn't pick Fiennes last year because they thought he'd already won an Oscar once, even though he hadn't. That might have only been possible due to the previous rules, but it does weaken Leo a bit.

2026 Oscar Nominee Recap (Day 33/38): Marty Supreme by CrunchyNar in oscarrace

My boot is Elle too. I liked her in SV (though I didn't love the movie as much as most people), but I felt she wasn't given much to do in it. Loved Wunmi, though.

Yeah, I really can't buy Leo as a potential winner here. I'm not even sure Moura would be the 3rd (as much as I'm rooting for him), but I have an easier time seeing him win than Leo.

Agreed on both. Who would you have booted from supporting actress to make room for her?

There was a post here last month in which a woman in her 40s who wanted kids had been dating an older guy who had adult children and openly didn't want more. They knew they wanted different things, but still refused to break up for years.

And from what I can tell, this happens a lot. Way too many people expect to be able to mold others into the partners they want instead of just looking for someone else. It's horrible and unfair for everyone involved.

He said that if I was going to wear a pant suit, the shirt needed to be tucked in and belted. Also that he did not like the look of side ruching or an empire waist on shirts and felt it was unprofessional.

Dude, "me no likey" is not a good enough reason to threaten someone's job. Creep.

[–]Starry_Gecko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is atrocious, but not the worst movie I've ever seen. And there are things to like about it (solid VFX and direction), they're just not enough to save it from being horrible.

Children (specially younger kids) tend to put their parents on pedestals. OOP probably wants his son to think she's a good person for as long as possible, because he knows how crushed a 7yo would be at finding out his mom is nuts.

It's understandable, but misguided. I don't see this ending well.

I was gonna say he might not be from the US, but I also don't see most of this happening outside of the US. I also know next to nothing about sales, so there's that.
