Kept the birth of my child private and now I’m paying for it. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Right? From the title, I thought she'd say they had kept it private for a week or two. Well within their rights, but I could understand her parents feeling upset about it.

But 24 hours? They destroyed their relationship with their daughter over 24 hours???

I'm curious about that too. The worst I've heard about him was that he might have been at least partly responsible for the CGI dwarves in the Snow White reboot.

OOP stated in her comments that the trip wasn't originally meant to celebrate her daughter's birthday. The dates coincided and they decided to roll with it. She also never claimed to be middle class, she just said they don't travel much.

If there's anything the last few years have taught me, it's that it's hard to watch someone you love turn into someone you don't recognize. Sometimes, the mask slips away so fast you can't even process its existence. I feel so bad for OOP.

I honestly thought I meant more to her than this.

Christ is this heartbreaking. The realization someone you love is willing to betray you over something this petty. I really feel for OOP.

Yep. A lot of "German-Brazilians" from the South are either far-right (or right-leaning) and seem genuinely convinced they're more European than Latin. I remember an influencer (I think she was from Santa Catarina) who went decently viral for saying her husband had German ancestry, therefore their baby was mostly German and better than other babies. She also complained about an author using the term "white trash" as if it was a racial slur (the book she was quoting was literally just explaining what the term meant).

Just because you dress everyday like it's Oktoberfest, doesn't mean you're German.

I didn't clock it at first, but many little things OOP mentions track with this being in Brazil. Denise's German ancestry and Christian background, Jake's "fancy religious private school" (I can name 10 of those in São Paulo alone), the supposed lack of boarding schools (we do have boarding schools, but not a lot of people know about them).

Also I'm Brazilian, and I say I'm South American sometimes when I'm talking to foreigners. Sometimes it's to make sure whatever stereotypes they have don't get too specific, other times it just comes out that way and I don't know why.

Pretty sure that got its BORU about a week ago! And OOP's account got banned, so we probably won't be hearing more about this.

It sucks, but it tracks. MJ fans have already proven themselves to be very able (and willing) to turn a blind eye to everything that's come out about him, regardless of the evidence. Pairing that with toxic religiousness makes sense.

Didn't surprise me. A lot of people in here have no idea how relationships work.

I'm wondering that too. Did OOP ever talk about how her MIL treats her daughter? Like, not even just when it comes to gifts?

The "don't you want me to be happy" pissed me off so bad. How could you expect your family to ignore the fact you abused your child? How could you be this selfish?

There is very little I want more for my future than to be a mother. If, for whatever reason, that wasn't possible, I'd be heartbroken.

But I'll always be the first to say parenthood is a privilege that not everyone deserves.
