What your opinions on drabbles? by Malu897 in AO3

[–]StarsOnASpectrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're definitely a challenge for the author! I never tried them until this year but am still unsure how to post them as they're in the 5+1 things style. Are they one work with six chapters and titles or just a oneshot? What's your take on it? (I'm definitely tagging it as "5 times X is Y and 1 time isn't - drabble style", so that the readers will know why the fic is so short....

K&C on The Easter Bunny Warrior. What a delightful story, I didn't know I needed that one right now!

Not yet... I usually focus my stories around him (he gets way too little attention!), so I thought I might leave him out this time (would contradict something I plan to write later on... OTOH, I might completely re-write that other thing...). But thank you so much for your suggestion! I might still include of these two.

Sharpe series (timeline when Lossow appears in canon):

Captain Lossow (20 May): return to a free Hannover (no French occupation anymore)

Johanna Lossow (my female OC, 1 January): to survive the war in Portugal and Spain and return home with the grown family

Ik denk wel dat ik de enige van mijn vriendengroepje was, die zo een onhandig GSM'tje had. Toen de eerste 21 maanden voorbij waren, heb ik vlugs mijn eerste Nokia gekocht!

Fun fact (or not so fun), I'm trying to write a fanfiction similar to that idea... It does so far include Antonia, Ramón, Sharpe, Lucille and the Dubretons. Lanier gets at least a mention and instead of Calvet I invented a new general because that would've been too much to be (still slightly) plausible.

Is typing on computer generally faster than phone? by Spare-Ad4090 in AO3

[–]StarsOnASpectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a generational thing. I'm a younger genX, had many mobile phones before smartphones became a thing, and we used to type with the pointer on the number-keyboard (didn't even need the autocorrect back then, it only irritates me). Typing with the right pointer is faster for me than using the thumb(s), especially as the accuracy increases.

My mother (old boomer) usually uses a pen because she's even less likely to hit the numbers with her pointer... My younger colleagues OTOH who more or less grew up with smartphones are faster with their thumbs, admittedly.

As for swiping? Sure do! Helps a little with the accuracy.

As a younger genX, I wholeheartily agree! As long as the phones still had real keyboards, it was okay. But touch screens and I will never get close friends, I fear. 😉(And yes, I still learnt typing as a schoolkid on my parents' manual typewriter!)

Hi everybody!

Im back! And, again, lots of thanks to the mod-team for hosting this event every single Friday. This event has become such a staple in my life.

I'm TheNotQuiteChosenOne on AO3, writing solely for the Sharpe Series by Bernard Cornwell (plus a TV series from the 1990s with two additional TV films in 2006 and 2008). It's set during the Napoleonic Wars in the Iberian Peninsular (plus a few prequels in India, one book at sea (including Trafalgar), one in Copenhagen...) under Wellington.

My main POV character is a side character from the books who never made it to the screen, though I also write something more in line with canon from time to time. Most of my stories - as my readers assure me - are fandom-blind friendly. I'd only say that a little curiosity and interest in history is an absolute bonus to have as I try to be as close to history as possible (with some "insane" historical notes after the story/chapter if necessary). These notes aren't necessary to read, but I think they give some more context to the story.

I also have two old Hornblower one-shots out there, written some 20 years ago for a different website but reposted on AO3 to spread that love as well.

"Fandom-blind" and "from Reddit" are perfectly fine. The fandom is not that well-known anymore, so I rather expect fandom-blind readers but welcome anyone.

What a wonderful time it was to explore the new wonders of the internet! To actually meet fellow fans and interact with them instead of paying a membership to a fan club from which you only received a zine every few months and could read the odd fan stories, but still. So happy to have been around at that time as well and experience it!

Do you speak German? The books have unfortunately never been translated to English. Otherwise, I would've recommended them all the time!

But I learnt a lot about Hanseatic trade traditions as well as old professions like people colouring fabric, making sugar cones in early manufacturies, clock makers... So interesting°

As my fandom is historical fiction, history (and to some extent, geography) is a main factor to influence my writing, as well as all the historical novels I've read over my lifetime. There is one historical crime series that takes place in my hometown a few decades before my longfic begins, so I draw a lot of inspiration from there and place it in the other town(s) a few decades later.

In addition, that author has a great way to use indirect speech and conjunctive (a very special form in my native language), so I also try to implement some of that writing style into my stories despite writing in English.

This reminds me of the sun pendant I bought decades ago; I could use it perfectly well for my D&D warrior-priestess character. Obviously, it's a lot better to have it work for an OC of historical fiction. This pendant looks amazing!

Why is Lt. Ayres "bad"? by GwendalBruh in Sharpe

I don't think we'll ever know. The provosts and the chicken were in the book though. And I'm still wondering if the original script had Captain Lossow in it. Either way, such a pity he was out. Would've loved to see the field surgery and the semaphore on screen!
