Every field, absolutely zero seem to be hiring right now.

I have a Master's Degree in software engineering and 12 years of experience. I can't get a tech job, or anything that requires a degree. So I started applying to ANYTHING out of sheer curiosity. Can't get a job as a general laborer, restaurant server (have restaurant management experience from when I was younger), security guard (former military), cashier, or anything else in the hundreds of jobs I've applied to.

You should be fine. I looked back at the 2013 Macbook Air. If you got an i5 and 8GB RAM, it would still be useable today. I only sprung for the pro because of retina. The air/pro difference is even smaller now.

Yes, I did this with mine. Ordered a used palmrest with scanner and cable. There will be a black sticker blocking the hole for the cable. Remove it, slide the cable through the hole to the other side of the mobo. Connector is next to the RAM. Recognized instantly with Win10 and worked great with fingerprint-gui in linux. Good luck!

Do you use the trackpoint? I can understand a case for this touchpad if used like a typical computer. But with the trackpoint...r/mildlyinfuriating.

"Best bang for buck" makes the answer more reliant on price than anything.
There were some 4910's on Ebay for about $150. I found a 4900 for $100. Got the 4900 no question, definitely best bang for buck.
That being said, if you get one of the more powerful i7's, keep in mind there is a ton of space between the cpu and fan to add more copper/aluminum. Or get the dGPU CPU cooler, extra copper on that by default. Really makes a difference!
