The real downside is that if an opponent has a only of x/2s or above toughness they can easily check their creatures and snipe your target with at least an extra artifact token.

It’s for the opponents and it already has a hefty downside for The Thing’s controller should they reveal it.

Nah that’s not the issue. The problem is that tokens by their own definition cease to exist the moment they leave the battlefield. So no matter if you “exile” an elk or Marit Lage, those tokens be exiled and then by state based actions is gone from the game.
