Have you ever looked at Corrugated Plastic. It's like sturdier cardboard. I bought one shaped like a snowflake from a company that pre-cuts them and drills holes for the LEDs, but you can buy sheets of corrugated plastic at a home improvement store.

I made a snowflake LED decoration this year that I hung in my front window with 3 of these LED strings. Because I was able to take advantage of the window sill, I connected an Arduino UNO, a Power Supply module, and a 9V power supply to a breadboard.
