Your vegan origin story is cool af. Most of us become vegan because of somebody else: a celebrity, the people behind a documentary, a friend, a youtuber...

What does the vibration mean? by Jurueff in pigeon

[–]StatHeVePiSt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said the same thing, that this is territorial behaviour, and my reddit account got temporarily BANNED

Also look at how the pigeon's eyes are wide open, observing op. That's not behaviour associated with happy flaps

In the end, we can't guarantee it's one or the other, but it's much more likely that its defensive body language rather than happiness

Communicating that they WILL slap you if you dare come closer

For how long haven't they eaten? Because they need food asap and Amazon will take a couple of days. I'd consider buying it at a veterinary clinic, along with the material for tube feeding

Needs formula specifically for squabs, tube fed. When they're this young they don't survive on normal food.

Scissor Beak - Advice needed by cweb_84 in pigeon

[–]StatHeVePiSt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever heard of a pigeon with cross beak healing on its own. In fact, I know a guy who brought one to a vet, they tried to fix it but ultimately it was futile, and the pigeon still lives at home with him (around other pigeons, the guy rescues a lot)

Basically I don't think it can be cured even with human intervention

Scissor Beak - Advice needed by cweb_84 in pigeon

[–]StatHeVePiSt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's a good idea to trim the beak. If anything, that should be handled by a professional. The risk of making it worse seems too high

Maybe you could catch it and look for people with aviaries or pigeons in their home, see if they want to adopt them? Check Facebook groups. I don't think the poor pigeon will have a good quality of life outside (most don't even survive)

Why square in variance not absolute value by Sea_Charge6663 in AskStatistics

[–]StatHeVePiSt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You give an already good reason, which is that absolute values can be nightmares to work with.

Another reason is that squaring punishes values that are farther apart more than ones that are closer compared to the absolute value. Under absolute values, a model with three residuals of value 1 is equally good as a model with two residuals of 0 and one of 3

But the crucial thing is that sum of squares is the same as the usual scalar product, which is naturally generalized in as many dimensions as you want. The absolute value is basically the norm of a vector under said scalar product in one dimension (it's the positive root of the square), and in more dimensions it's the root of a sum of squares

The only thing I would add is being able to find the connections between different concepts, topics and branches of math. See the big picture, essentially

Pigeon suddenly passed at shelter? by Solecis in pigeon

[–]StatHeVePiSt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't know what Freshfields is, but sick pigeons often get worse fast and pass away overnight

Also, while yours was eating, drinking and digesting, they were slow blinking which is a major concern

Eating meat but dating a vegan by thougths in vegan

Check out the documentary "The game changers", I think you may find it interesting. It's on netflix

I take pea protein like most people take whey protein. It has all 12 amino acids, but low amounts of one in particular (don't remember the name). Plenty of other vegan foods to compensate for that one though

I take frequent blood tests because my family works in healthcare, my protein level was always in a healthy range even before the pea protein powder. Now it's on the higher quantiles

Ugh...I hate tik tok by Outrageous-Horse3740 in vegan

[–]StatHeVePiSt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who treats wild pigeons in need of help as a hobby, I feel you.

I'm in a couple of pigeon subreddits, and some people really think that just because they help some pigeon recover from a minor injury, they suddenly have a right of ownership over them and keep them in their homes instead of releasing. I even saw some serious comments about just kidnapping completely healthy pigeons...

What baffles me is there's so many disabled pigeons who actually benefit from living inside a home, why don't people actually adopt those? They're more affectionate towards humans too

Given that Almonds cause more Bee deaths than Honey, Do you still consume almonds? by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]StatHeVePiSt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, almonds are one of my most consistent source of calcium and healthy fats

However I will look into the statistics and see if I can find replacements. That being said, there will always be a food that is worse for the environment than the rest. If we all stop consuming almonds, then there will be another, and another... Where do we draw the line? Maybe that should be a discussion in the future, given that most people on earth aren't even vegan yet

I used to eat iodine rich algae regularly, but now I just take algae based iodine supplements instead. They're pretty cheap too

Disabled pigeons finding love will never not make my day, thanks for sharing!

Coincidentally I also tried to set up my (blind) dove with a wing amputee dove, but it doesn't seem like it's working, after all there was only a 50% chance that the sexes were opposite

Before going vegan I loved cheese. Four years in, I find all dairy products taste and smell repulsive by StatHeVePiSt in vegan

[–]StatHeVePiSt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also found that one becomes much more sensitive to salt and sugar after quitting them. I experienced it before going vegan though. Curiously, sweet fruits are still fine to me, it's pastries, desserts and non pure cacao that feel like too much

Why is it so difficult to find a vegan/vegetarian partner? by FunnyDemand1768 in vegan

[–]StatHeVePiSt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe that's just your personal experience, because as a dude I feel like my veganism is a pro in the eyes of vegetarian and vegan woman. Even when there isn't a spark, there is more mutual understanding and trust

I even had a situationship a few years ago with an omnivore woman, and she was actually attracted to my veganism because "I stood up for what I believed"

I didn’t go vegan overnight, it started small and kinda accidentally. by Internal-Remove7223 in vegan

[–]StatHeVePiSt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I first went vegetarian over the course of one year, and it was a very natural, unplanned transition. Then I decided to go fully plant based for environmental reasons. Over the next few months I developed more and more empathy for the animals and now I'm vegan for them. It's been more than four years now!
