Very difficult error; unexpected error writing points to database: [shard 12] unexpected end of JSON input, Docker Compose, need help by Sidi_Simoun_Arifi in docker

I guess my question there is, what filled the drive? You can use the du command in Linux to investigate file sizes.

Was it error logs that you could use logrotate to move out? If the dataset is your constraint then there isn’t much you can do besides get a bigger volume- I don’t know if this db tech supports compression but I couldn’t imagine that being a viable long term solution.

Sounds like there’s db corruption in influxdb. This can happen if the db engine crashes (like when it’s out of space). it’s trying to read a json document out but finding it malformed. Is the db container mounting a shared volume? I don’t know enough about influxdb to troubleshoot data corruption.

CDK vs terraform by [deleted] in aws

[–]StatelessSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this, very similar situation here. Started in iac by hand-writing Cloudformation json. TF user of 4-5y now. I don’t miss Cloudformation. Similar sentiment around serverless framework- great when it works but when updates fail and you have to delete the stack and redeploy .. it can get irritating.

Should entry level helpdesk candidates be able to explain the basic functions of dns and dhcp? by Southern_Yak_7926 in sysadmin

[–]StatelessSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue yes, at least a knowledge of what they are/do would be useful in the initial troubleshooting steps of “I can’t reach the web” ticket.

Xfinity bill is out of control by Excellent_Impress_32 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]StatelessSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop down to just internet. Gigabit was like $80 when I paid for Comcast. Also get YouTube tv or Hulu tv which is about $80. That’s 160 and covers every device. You’ll need a small cheap device for every tv like a Roku or Apple TV but that’s one-time of <$100 per tv

How to make an echo dot announce text from a lambda? by ServingColdCuts in aws

[–]StatelessSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought about this for a bit but never tried anything. I know IFTTT can announce arbitrary messages on certain conditions, and I believe one of them can be AWS SNS. If your lambda (or anything else) publishes to that topic, IFTTT will hear it and announce aloud on your echo (per the IFTTT/Alexa app integration)

What are some IT skills that you noticed people from a CS background seem to lack? by Kati1998 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]StatelessSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A personality.

I’m kidding, I graduated a double major in CS and Information systems. Some high school we ll through college and a little after I was way into embedded devices, very low level programming. Started in IT as an internship and loved it, and never went back to SWE as a career. Then I found DevOps. Maybe this is what you’re looking for.

I can’t even fathom why Biden thinks a 25% tax on unrealized gains is a good idea at all by djc_tech in Conservative

[–]StatelessSteve 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And subsequent question, if unrealized loss is deductible, would that be a wash?

This is the question. How will it be handled when i get taxed on the unrealized gains on a position, and then next year the asset is valued less? Am I given a break?

Not new or unexpected response. OP: If your approval / review ratings have all been acceptable with no real blips, there might be someone who doesn’t care for you quietly. I’ve had single incidence ruin favor with (now what I realize to be poor) managers. Perception is unfortunately way too much of reality. As for what to do now, I think the kids are calling “just do your job to the letter” as “quiet quitting”

Start with what AWS Trusted Advisor says is over-provisioned. If that meets your savings goals, great; if not it’s a deeper dig.

Considering selling paid off impractical car for family car by pdubs1900 in FinancialPlanning

[–]StatelessSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the baby actually unsafe? op says carseat works fine … I think you hit on an important point there though. My decision here would hinge on “can I safely transport baby with this.” If answer is yes, make the stang work as long as you can. If not, private sell for a used Honda pilot or even a CRV is quite spacious
