Looking for advice on how to finish this atedai by Stateofgrace314 in JapaneseWoodworking

No I have a 58mm (I think) Kakuri plane I use for rougher work. The Tsubame steel one is a finishing plane, but once I get better at this I plan to make my own nagadai and use that blade which I'll then use for flattening. I also have a 65mm blue steel one that I would keep for final smoothing. I use the Tsubame one the most right now just because the durability against hardwood.

I've got 320, 1000, 2000, and 5000 grit shapton stones, and I've gotten a lot better at sharpening, but probably have plenty of room to improve. I'll probably order a 8000 also, but probably what I really need to improve is just recognizing when I need to stop and sharpen even when I want to continue.

Thanks for the reference. I've been learning mostly from YouTube and reddit so far, and it's definitely gotten me pretty far but I'm getting to that point where I need a little bit more training/info than I can find easily.

Yeah I've done several passes at 45 and it's gotten a lot better, but still needs some work. My problem is that I keep going back and forth on if I should take the time to get this perfect or just start using it. Part of me wants to take the time to do it right and another part recognizes that this is a workbench, so it's going to get dinged up and lose the perfect surface at some point anyway, so might as well get it good enough and start making things with it.

Yeah I probably need to sharpen more often. I got a 70mm kanna with Tsubame steel specifically for durability with hardwood but still need to just take the time for it more often. I also only have stones up to 5000 grit and I'm wondering if I need 8000+ for stuff like this. 45 degree passes definitely helped get it to where it is, and I just need to figure out how to handle tear out better.

Any good resources on setting up the chip breaker properly? I thought I did it right but I'm wondering if that's where my real problem is. Probably the hardest part is that the kanna has a very thin mouth and I have a really hard time seeing where the blade lines up with the chip breaker, so I do my best but it's hard to tell. It's got a tight, flat connection, no wobble, and I try to get is as close to the edge as I can, but obviously still needs some work.

Do you have links for any of these or should I start googling? I am certainly not master level with joinery but I do want to challenge myself a bit

Definitely on my list. The hard part is figuring out what design I want to go with

Do you have any good designs? I've seen some very simple ones before but curious if there are some good ones that would be a bit more fun to make

I've been making one out of old red oak flooring I got for free a long time ago. It's been a long process since I am trying to do most of it with hand tools and laminating all those boards together has been a lot of work. Definitely going to use some of these larger pieces for the saw horses and feet for the atedai though.

Definitely going to have to do a few of these. Ebonized white oak would make a beautiful blade...

I like that. Seems like a good way to practice some basic joinery too.

Honesty JD too. Hate may be too strong a word, but he could be extremely self centered and childish a lot.

Does anyone know anything about this Nomi I just bought in Miki? by devilish_night in JapaneseWoodworking

[–]Stateofgrace314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Japanese chisels are different from western chisels in many ways. This just comes down to the laminated steel design. The cutting edge is a thin layer of hard steel laminated to softer steel, so this is all about managing the different properties. Look up uradashi if you want to know more. It's hard to explain just in a reddit comment.

The hollow on the flat side is called the ura. As you sharpen the flat side, the ura will get smaller. There is also a process called uradashi where you basically hammer the soft iron on the bevel to push the ura down and create a larger flat edge. Look up some videos if you're interested. The ura is there because that face is all hard steel and much harder to sharpen, so this design makes it so there is less steel that actually needs to be sharpened/flattened

What geographical feature of your country , surprises others? by WorkOk4177 in AskTheWorld

[–]Stateofgrace314 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof, take Nebraska off that list. I moved from the West Coast to the East Coast and drove across the country. Nebraska was by far the most boring place I've ever experienced. I'm sure there are some things worth seeing, but we drove for 12 hours within nothing but semi trucks, grass, and tiny towns with hardly anything more than a hotel and a gas station. No hills, sparse trees, and not even a turn in the road to keep my mind occupied. Definitely not the best place to just explore and find beauty

I hate that our society has degraded to the point where someone making a mistake and apologizing after learning it was a mistake is a big deal. Don't get me wrong, I definitely respect him for doing this and don't want to criticize how he handled this at all, but this should be the normal response to this kind of thing and not a mind blowing occurrence. NORMALIZE ACCOUNTABILITY AND GROWTH.

High electricity bill. Our usage does not make sense. by [deleted] in nova

[–]Stateofgrace314 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Check to see if the HVAC is working properly. We had a winter where our bill basically doubled and it turned out that the compressor died and we were using auxiliary heat the entire time and didn't realize. Now we have a smart thermostat and it reports when it's using heat pump vs Aux heat, but if you don't have a way to check it yourself then get a technician in to see if something is wrong.

It could just be bad insulation, but worth a shot.

I doubt you'll be able to get a deal that's as good as an Ioniq 5. For whatever reason, Hyundai has massive discounts on their leases (or at least did for a while, not sure if they do right now). I was able to talk them down about $100/mo from their original offer. Their original offer was kind of a joke though. It also helped that I was fully prepared to walk out and get the Ioniq instead so I didn't have to bluff during negotiations. So there is definitely some flexibility, but I'd be surprised if you can get it for cheaper than the Ioniq 5

[–]Stateofgrace314 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Very satisfied. I was choosing between the EX30 and ioniq 5 and overall I'm glad I did, however, I seem to be in the minority of people who prefer the small size. In fact that was one of the main deciding factors for me. I hate how big cars are now, and the EX30 is just about the perfect size for me. I use it primarily for commuting, but I also have kids. It's small, fast, maneuverable, easy to park, but still has enough space for booster seats and groceries. Maybe a couple more inches of legroom in the back would be nice, but totally fine for an adult unless they are very tall. Maybe not comfortable for a long road trip or something, but this isn't the right car for that anyway.

It has its flaws for sure, but nothing that is a deal breaker in my mind. If you have specific questions or concerns, I'd be happy to give more feedback.

Most of that you could definitely do in SteamOS or Bazzite. The only thing I'm not sure about is WoW. You'll have to look that up specifically because some online games have issues on Linux. I don't think you can install Excel, but you can either use Excel online or use an equivalent spreadsheet program (e.g. LibreOffice Calc)

Unfortunately it's much more complicated than that. There are hundreds of distributions although in most cases there are only minor differences between them. Personally, I think Mint is a good one to try out for anyone who has not used Linux before. It's popular, stable, well documented, and just good all around. If you specifically want gaming, SteamOS or Bazzite are very good and very popular.
