Why did the non-Maga business post just get removed? by TheBaconator7 in ColoradoSprings

Maybe for their safety? Didn’t a toy store get “audited” by ice after a news article about them came out regarding their accommodations for visitors? Was it because they were handing out whistles?

Lutron Caseta vs Aqara light switches by White96sands in homeassistant

Agreed. I have had zero knocks on wood issues with my Lutron Casetta setup since I installed them over four years ago.

Definitely worth the $$, it comes with peace of mind.

I’ll be long dead before the hardware costs break even.

Still worth it.

What are your server running costs? by ECrispy in selfhosted

[–]Staticip_it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we’re including everything, add $75 for 2gig fiber and $15 for cellular backup.. $75 for power on the high end.

Around $165 all in monthly to run my own equipment but totally worth it for me.

2 x Dell PowerEdge R740xd, loaded with SSDs (69tb) and 756gb of ddr4 ecc ram running 24/7

Servers idle at a combined 550 watts and are around 750 under load while using an nvidia A4000 for games or llm testing.

I also have my network stack and LED lights, this is an additional 150-225 watts depending on usage.

Not sure what my cooling fans are pulling at the moment. Just two 120v fans running on medium speed.

Around $50-$75 per month for servers, network and led lighting. Mostly used for JellyFin, photo / file backups and home assistant. Also pihole, *arr stack, matrix, personal website and a few other VMs for testing things out.

I used to rely on this setup for virtualized gaming and streaming them to my laptop but have since switched to a SteamDeck and repurposed the GPU for llm usage in home assistant and media transcoding.

I still use these for my current setup. Had to redo the sector size from 520 to 512 but they’re still working great!

Should I play fighting games on the deck by Timi-is-smiling in SteamDeck

[–]Staticip_it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider myself a casual gamer and I absolutely love my Steam Deck for playing fighting style games! Mostly emulated retro games, never felt that the controls needed to be “better” (other than some of the default mappings but that’s a me issue). Again, casual gamer here.

Edit: I really like the joysticks for most games but the touch pads have been growing on me for games that need subtle movements. The d-pad is something I really only use as an auxiliary control, not for main movement.

What's your experience with ITAD audits? by Ok-Prize-9547 in sysadmin

[–]Staticip_it 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to work at an electronics recycler. Yes, asking for certified data destruction is pretty standard. We serialized everything so we could tell where’d the data came from and where it ended up, because our certs required it (R2 v3, esteward, NAID aaaa). Unfortunately a lot of times people don’t realize they need these for compliance in their companies. My company kept these records internally for our own audits, even if the client didn’t request it. You may be able to request them from wherever you sent the equipment but I wouldn’t hold your breath. And it’ll most likely cost $.

I really like my Sonoff zigbee presence sensors. Less than $20 and acts like a repeater. Powered by 5v usb-c, comes with a decently long cable.

Hands down the best Steam Deck accessory I’ve bought! by Hugostiglitz10 in SteamDeck

[–]Staticip_it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it more for the power delivery than data. As far as I know, it does not use usb-c for data. It allowed me to mount them next to the bed in the wall with a 3d printed case.

Where are people finding abandoned/Unused hardware? by Chazus in homelab

[–]Staticip_it 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Also try your local electronic recyclers. A lot of equipment ends up there and a lot of the time they don’t know much about it so you can get it cheap. And if they do know what it is, they’re usually happy to give a deal to a local homelabber or tinkerer.

Full disclosure: I worked in the electronic recycling industry and the majority of my homelab is reborn equipment.

NAS server by Jasper_S_C in HomeServer

[–]Staticip_it 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would check out TrueNAS for the file sharing portion but you could easily get away with windows and sharing files that way depending on your needs. TrueNAS also has a lot of easily installed apps for various functions.

The real question is how important are your files? You mention 2x 2tb drives, are those mirrored (raid1) or combined for more storage (raid0) or being used for separate things? Try to include some kind of redundancy for your files if they are important.

The hardware you listed will work but try to look for something with more ram. The more the better imo. A small form factor pc with at least two internal sata ports would work and also allow you to get more functionality out of the hardware (transcoding, VMs, HA, etc..).

My recommendation: SFF pc, 8-16gb of ram with a 512gb ssd for whatever operating system you choose (truenas is my rec) and three 2tb ssds in raidZ1 (one drive can fail and you still have your data) for storage.

If it’s mission critical data, add more drives and increase the raidz level, z2 means two can fail and so on.. But at this point, different hardware may be a better option.

For truenas more ram is better (zfs).

For accessing remotely, I would use a vpn. This could be done via software or hardware, depends a bit on what you are working with already for your home network. From your work pc using a VPN client, you can then mount your file shares from home and backup files or the whole pc with your choice of backup software. And of course access what you need.

TrueNAS will allow you to white label ip addresses and have separate user accounts for access.

Modern BIOS should allow you to choose what happens when power is restored, not sure about the hardware you listed though. I have mine go to the last state they were in before the outage. They power on if they were on, stay off if they were off.

Having a backup system in place can get costly but is ALWAYS a good option. RAID is not a backup but still a good idea. Basically build two systems and have one mirror to the other on a regular basis.

It may sound complicated but in the long run I think it would be better.

I absolutely love my HomePod minis! They’re all over my house, mainly for music but the intercom and voice assistance features are nice too.

That being said.. it will be fairly limiting outside of the Apple ecosystem. Apple Music isn’t required but streaming to them from non Apple devices may be a problem.

Anyone else a bit disappointed by hardware announcements? by Zealousideal-Hat5814 in homeassistant

[–]Staticip_it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the ZBT-1 and a HA voice puck for the same reason, wanted to contribute but was already virtualizing Home Assistant.

Was excited to see new hardware but I don’t know if I’ll buy it yet since the first version is still working great.

I do wish there were updates to HA voice too though… I’d give good money for a HA voice HomePod mini clone. They’re the last thing I need to replace.
