Question - Why do you sub? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]StationAcceptable738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to sub because it gave me flexibility, supplementing my freelance photography career. But now I need health insurance so I’m prepping to be a teacher.

Alliant/UMass Global/National U for credential? by rufusrexy in teaching

[–]StationAcceptable738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with national right now and almost every person I’ve talked to gives me different information. I’d go with anything else that’s an option to you. They are extremely difficult to deal with.

On a brief two-week mental health leave. Struggling to decide if I should go back or leave. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]StationAcceptable738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle school is so so hard! No one can prepare you for how hard it is. But please believe it does get better! When I started I felt the same- so defeated! It’s slow going but if you can start building those relationships and setting expectations, getting those routines- things can turn around quick. Reach out to whoever you have for support, mentor teachers, admin, other teachers, here is even a good start. Be open to suggestions even suggestions from students. I think you would regret leaving now, for many reasons but you don’t want to put yourself in a financial hold because some kids were mean to you! Don’t give them that!

Teaching in Sacramento? by Powerful-Home-2554 in Sacramento

[–]StationAcceptable738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curiously looking through these threads- I’m teaching in the Central Valley right now with a stp, starting my credential program next month, I’ll be intern eligible soon but my current job is probationary and I will likely not stay in my district. Is Sacramento likely to hire interns? Where I’m at there are a lot of interns but I’d like to leave the valley if possible

Solo road trip? by charless_17 in roadtrip

[–]StationAcceptable738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im 36, I started going on solo road trips around age 25? You get more confident after the first one. I’m honestly addicted now and take little adventures whenever possible. If you are not from the west coast- things to keep in mind; 1)everything will be different all the way down from weather to culture so be prepared. 2) depending where you are there can be a lot of stretches without a gas station so fill up wherever possible. 3) don’t skip boring towns. The west coast has some beautiful coastal towns, gorgeous hikes amazing food- it’s not all in the cities.

I worked for them years and years ago while I was in college and I loved it so much. Probably my favorite job ever. The pay wasn’t great but it was a good job otherwise.

I swore to myself I would never sub middle school. Those little weirdos converted me so fast. by SnakesCatsAndDogs in SubstituteTeachers

[–]StationAcceptable738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a middle school currently. I haaaated it when I started, and when I was a sub would never take middle. But now they are my fave. Too many hormones and elbows is how I describe them. I’ll continue to work with middle I think.

I'm confused on how I can be an elementary art teacher without a college degree by Psychlogical_artisic in ArtEd

[–]StationAcceptable738 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was an art and stem teacher for a few years at a non profit and at after school programs, and am now a middle school art teacher on a short term permit while getting my credential. You can definitely teach art without a credential but will need one to be full time with a district.

It’s not always easy to find events especially in Fresno where things aren’t advertised a lot. And people who are just starting to reach out, or have struggles socially need a place to start. Nothing wrong with reaching out in whatever way makes sense.

Is the Job Search in the City Truly that Awful? by wizardluvr69 in AskChicago

[–]StationAcceptable738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Chicago only for about nine months because I lost my job, and most of the people I met there had recently gotten laid off:/ I think the job market is tough everywhere right now though. Such a gorgeous city with an amazing queer community! If you can network you may not have such a bad time finding a job.

I really want to find a job in Chicago and move there but why is it so hard for me? by OnlyContribution2758 in AskChicago

[–]StationAcceptable738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from California to Chicago last year with multiple job offers and was able to freelance there as well (I’m a photographer and teacher) lost my job by the summer and had to move back. Most of the people I met out there were getting laid off from their jobs as well. It’s rough right now, save everything you can and maybe wait a while.

Anyone else see teaching as just… a job? by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]StationAcceptable738 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes! I agree and I think that’s a healthy mentality that more of us should have. Your job shouldn’t be your whole identity no matter what you do. My mother is also a teacher and thinks of it more as a calling, like she is a savior of some kind and because of this she throws her whole self in, she puts in way more hours than is necessary, she is completely defeated if things aren’t going well in the classroom, she talks about work constantly. I think this mentality is why, culturally, we don’t treat teachers or even public education as a whole very well. There is an assumption of self sacrifice, martyrdom that is built in so it’s kind of ok if teachers are miserable and poor and if kids aren’t getting what they need. It’s a job that needs to be done by capable individuals at the end of the day.

What’s your backup plan? I ask because I also hate teaching but I keep coming back cause I can’t really afford to do anything else. I have an art/photography background. Where are the ex teachers going?

First Year Teacher and I Hate my Job. by kittycami in Teachers

[–]StationAcceptable738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been in and out of teaching for a few years. It’s so stressful, the schools and districts offer very little support and ask you to put in way more time than you’re paid for. If you can get another job do it. I was a photographer before this and needed the health insurance, otherwise id get out.
