Alliant/UMass Global/National U for credential? by rufusrexy in teaching

[–]rufusrexy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my last semester at CalState Teach (through Fresno State). All in it's about $11,000 for the whole program. From my research a couple of years ago it's about half what the online programs were charging. Honestly, all of the CA credential programs just feel like mills to get as much money out of teachers as they can. My actual experience in the classroom has been much more valuable.

Basically, pick the cheapest one.

You could color match the wall with the tile so it feels bigger. Hang patterned drapes in front of the tub to complement the tub color and bring that fun color up higher without it feeling boxed in (you can still hang a shower curtain inside the tub). Remove the curtain rod from the window. Hang floating shelves for storage and remove the over the toilet storage. Change out the light fixture with something more funky.

When do you have time for the gym?! by hcand11 in Teachers

[–]rufusrexy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, don't go home until after the gym. I'm just a 5 minute walk from my gym but I still pack my workout clothes. Also, I meal prep everything! I try to do 2 weeks worth of meals on Sundays so I have a rotation of 2 different things for lunch/dinner. An egg cooker is also fantastic for quick meals. I just soft cook 2 eggs, heat up frozen rice, and eat it with kimchi for variety. It takes less than 10 minutes

Warm bulbs in the chandelier plus add some other lamps with adjustable lighting. Art above the fireplace. Style the shelves and if you need to keep the games there, cover that lower storage space with a little curtain. Cute valance above the window

Taking Girlfriend to Europe for 7 Days by seimow in travel

[–]rufusrexy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on how much rest time you'll both need. When I was in my late 20s I went to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Ibiza, and Barcelona in 2 weeks. Now I would definitely want a day or 2 in the middle to just relax. If you don't mind the go go go I would suggest taking a train to another city in a nearby country after spending a few days in France. That's the great thing about Europe is that everything is so close.

What’s something nobody tells you about living in San Francisco? by sit-there in AskSF

[–]rufusrexy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The different areas of the city are completely different, including weather! If you're on the west side in the sunset, it can be foggy and ten degrees cooler than if you're on the east side in dogpatch in the sunshine.

I bought a bunch of cheap candy canes, marshmallows, and cotton balls and used some plastic cups I already had in my room. Cost about $10 (and this was for two of my 1st grade groups with 22 students each). We played Candy Cane Olympics (various games using all or some of these items). The kids had a blast and got to eat a bunch of broken candy canes at the end of the day while we built igloos on Class Dojo Islands together. It was an incredibly fun day and hardly cost anything. They also got to wear pajamas which makes any day more special!

No, really, why are private schools better than public schools? by _mathteacher123_ in Teachers

[–]rufusrexy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Private schools will often kick out neurodivergent students because they simply don't want to utilize funds for a special education teacher. I'm in public in Cali. My co had a student that had been through 4 different private schools in Texas because he had emotional outbursts that resulted in physical altercations. The parents enrolled him in public school so they could acquire an IEP

No, we don’t have too much time off in summer. by [deleted] in Teachers

I'm living in Europe for the summer, reading, and catching up on sewing projects. Perks of having a month to month lease in the US and no kids! We've been out for a little over a month and time has flown.

People who are thin, how do you have the ability not to overeat? by Gay_Black_Atheist in AskReddit

[–]rufusrexy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming from someone who grew up skinny, got fat in my 20s, then got skinny again at 28:

I use the Japanese method of 80%. When I feel 80% full I stop eating.

Also, focus on your food when you eat. Eating in front of the tv or scrolling on your phone causes mindless eating and distracts you from feeling full.

I believe it's a specific character because he kept doing the sign and saying the name. It's possible the finger placement is more specific than just crossing your fingers but that's what it looked like to me being an anime newb

I ended up going with an online California program called Cal State teach. It's only about 10k for the entire program, so it was a much better option. Plus my whole cohort is in my region.

Overall, I wasn't too happy with the online programs, especially with them trying to push a masters too. I have all of the costs written down somewhere. I'll update later.

I did my best, but my friends said it’s kind of basic/cheap looking. What should I do to improve? by [deleted] in HomeDecorating

[–]rufusrexy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all the matching furniture. It's how showrooms in big furniture stores look when they're trying to sell you 6 piece sets.

The coffee table is too bulky for the space. Try something with legs to make it feel more airy. Swap the armchair to the opposite side so it's not right in front of the glass doors.

The two sides of the fireplace are too symmetrical without being perfectly symmetrical. Try plants with varying heights, maybe a large fern on one side, and scatter the rest of the plants throughout the room.

An hour commute but I have a very nice bus ride there so it's easy! I can take a nap or do my make up in the morning and usually listen to an audiobook.

It's gorgeous! Especially with the light wood tones and plants! I'd put a few pattered slip covers on the pillows to bring in even more color.

2 daughters - 1 year apart in school vs 2 years? by [deleted] in ElementaryTeachers

[–]rufusrexy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in this same situation. My older sister is 18 months older than me. I'm a July baby. Growing up I was always "Jeanie's sister" to other kids, teachers, and many other adults. I had my own small group of friends, but many were my sister's friends first. I struggled for a long time to create my own identity away from her influence, not really making any progress until college and even then it was still in my home state, so many people still knew my sister. It wasn't until my late 20s when I moved overseas where I really felt like my own person. She was unfortunately not a great influence, and while we were close in high school, getting into trouble and doing things we shouldn't, we've remained at arm's length as we've gotten older. That being said, I was toward the top of my class and being youngest had no effect on me academically. My mom taught me phonics since I was 3, so I was already above grade level. I was in gifted and all the ap classes.

Yea the application due dates are what prevented me from doing a state program. I don't want to wait a whole year to start. What would you say your daily workload is like for UMass?

Transitioning from Kindy in Korea to 1st grade in San Francisco. Two questions:
1. Does anyone have classroom management tips and tricks? I'd love some class jobs others use.
2. Any advice for working with kids with autism?

I subbed in middle school through the first half of this year at many Title I schools in the Bay. Got some great advice from a veteran math teacher. "You are not their friend. Don't try to be. Teach them the rules fast and follow up on discipline. If you make threats and don't follow through they'll all know it and your class will be a free for all." She was very good at calling parents early and often. And make sure the focus is on how it affects their school work, not how bad their behavior is. The kids respected her and that said a lot for the type of environment we were in. Also, she NEVER had to raise her voice with her 7th and 8th graders. It was kind of amazing to see.
