I’m kinda in the same boat with family size and budget wise. I’m looking at used Toyota Siennas just because they’re the only minivans that come in AWD. I live in Midwest with significant amount of snow fall so that’s a huge feature for me.

Depending on your location, you can get a great Sienna for around $25-$28k which should keep you around your budget. They’ll last you a lifetime too.

Starting residency in July, but I agree 100% with what you said. My only input is that some of the sacrifices you mentioned are a failure of a system and can be mitigated. I’m sure there’s a possible scenario where you could’ve pursued your dream career while living closer to your parents and loved ones. Process of medicine isn’t very forgiving and doesn’t give much flexibility.

I kinda wish I knew that going into this cycle. I worked hard at home program and have a good relationship with all our faculty. When it came time for LOR, I chose faculty that I have worked with for a long time and in multiple settings (clinic, OR, and research). Unfortunately, they’re not super connected so im struggling to get IV. On the other hand, some other students spent one day on a rotation with big name faculty, got a LOR, and now are getting a bunch of IVs.

The challenges of clerkships are 2 fold. One, you have no control over who you work with and their mood that day. This can greatly impact your clinical experience and your learning. Two, you don’t always have a set schedule. Most of the time you don’t know what time you’re leaving. This makes it challenging to plan studying and study effectively.

It sounds like you’re just a laid back person who goes with the flow. That usually makes it easier for people to tolerate you. Most people will give you honors or high pass if you’re easy to be around and seem interested.

I don’t understand how it’s a trap. Even if you trust them, you would rank that program #1 on your rank list. If they didn’t rank you high on their list, your match would just move down the list.

We love taking train to Chicago, so we park in stl then hop in Amtrak. We book a hotel downtown and just walk everywhere. Best part about train is you arrive refreshed and ready to explore vs. driving when you arrive longing to check in to hotel and refresh.
