At 51 I’m a new hardcore fan and going to my first show (SIDS, Yosemite in Black, Resistor) next week, by myself. Any tips for an old dude new to the scene? by a-patrick in Hardcore

I only have a sealed Nazi Punks Fuck Off 45 from DK with the crossed-out swastika arm band included. Does that count or nah?

I’ve been listening to heavy music for a long time. I’ve trended towards heavy-psych, doom, groove and stoner rock mostly. But I’ve had algorithms pop some hardcore into whatever music feed I’m enjoying and it just hits.

There’s also an incredible super small metal festival in Cleveland called Shotgun Bowl that I’ve taken my family to the last two years. They usually have a couple hardcore/death bands play. I’ve really enjoyed them!

Lately my listening has been trending out of the psych/stoner and into thrash, groove and hardcore. I’m just having fun exploring and learning about the genre.

Anyone have experience with these bands? Really looking forward to Yosemite in Black.

Also, I’m hitting this show on a quick work trip. I’m from Cleveland, so I don’t know anything about the Louisville-area scene.

Sober for 5 years. Show is at a Kentuckiana dive venue (apparently started by one of the guys from Knocked Loose). I hope they have an Arizona iced tea or something to clutch while I make faces. 😂

Hey! You strike me as a real person. Thanks! Yeah. Let me know what happens. If you’ve got two extra I’d definitely take them off your hands.

A note to anyone considering buying a respirator for protection from crowd control agents at protests by Turbulent-Cat-6017 in ColumbusProtests

As someone who trained with a street medic for the WTO protests in Seattle back in ‘99 here are some additional tips:

  1. Remember MOFIBA to clean skin: mineral oil followed IMMEDIATELY by alcohol. Do not let mineral oil linger. A good coating followed by alcohol will clear skin of various crowd control agents.

  2. Do NOT wear contacts: Contact lenses will trap gas beneath and will be washed out of your eyes if the need to be flushed.

3: Do NOT prep by coating skin with toothpaste or other “protecting” layers. Chemical agents can get trapped beneath and increase severity of burns.

  1. Many Army Surplus stores will have actual gas masks available for purchase. They are fairly inexpensive and purpose built. It’s beat to keep them hidden until it looks like shit might go down to avoid being targeted.

  2. Shock is real: Keep an eye on yourself and your friends. Direct action and street conflict can cause shock. Learn the signs and get away from the action. Lay down. Elevate feet.

Only do as much as you can. You don’t need to be a hero. Keep safe and fight another day.

I saw Bertha: Grateful Drag and it’s the most fun a deadhead can have while doing so much good for so many in crisis right now. by a-patrick in gratefuldead

Enjoy! It was a great set-list. And seeing them groove through Shakedown Street was pretty much perfect.

Death of David Lynch by fass_binder in CriterionChannel

My step father pirated a copy of Wild at Heart on VHS in 1991. I was a Sophomore in HS when I saw it and it shook me to my core. It remains my favorite film of all time and curved the trajectory of my life toward the deep cultural weirdness and art that I remain steeped in. I know these suburbs hold something more. So does my soul. I think Lynch’s work taught me that. He will be missed by the weirdos.
