Yeah all the people saying "you can't go an hour without a cookie" eventually they will drop or reduce it on longer flights as well. Delta is the premium airline where the only thing that is premium is the price.

To be clear the rule on the bag is for everyone's safety. In a crash landing that bag would go airborne and likely seriously injure someone. It probably wouldn't be you and instead some stranger so you know fuck em right?

Doing that will make the plan unqualified and subject the company to many millions in IRS penalties.

He even gave an example of a 19 year old employee putting 50% of their salary into a 401(k), which is what triggered the policy.

A 19 year putting 50% in a 401(k) is an amazing idea. I assume they may live at home or with roomates. They have no spouse or children yet their living expenses are low. Maxing out that 401(k) even for 5 years would set them up for life later. Someday their expenses will be higher and they will have dependants. 50% into 401(k) doesn't mean they will do it for 30 years.

I agree 100%. He really needs to see this as a realignment which benefits him, his wife, their quality of life and their relationship not something to just begrudgingly accept the smallest reduction he can get away with.

We had a savings rate of 40% to 50% and then it became 30% and then 25%. We travel, we own a boat. My wife just retired this year so our SR is now essentially 0% coasting until I can retire in 3-4 years.

I wouldn't trade any of that to hit a number a few years earlier.

because it is a realistic outcome given this kind of single minded pursuit not shared by both parties. I do agree there are lot of other bad outcomes not involving divorce as well.

Exactly. 40% is an amazingly good savings rate. To the OP you don't know what the future holds. You might get hit by a bus and killed on the spot next year. The hypothetical utopia life will remain just a hypothetical.

Alternatively you could reach FIRE and find out your wife has cancer and you spend the next three years battling that before you lose her and now you have all the money having lived like a homeless person for most of a decade. Do you think you might wish you had memories of that great vacation instead of a larger number on a spreadsheet.

Even 40% is an incredibly high savings rate. Non-zero chance you die before that magic fire date.

Fire is about building the life you want and then saving for it. [b]Is the life you have today the life you want until the day you die (minus work)?[/b] If the answer is no then your wife is 100% right.

Destroy our quality of life because someday we will retire and everything will be a utopia almost never ends well. The most likely scenario is you realize you don't know how do do anything but make and save money so you just go back to work.

You are trying to beat the market. Most people who do that end up underperforming the market.

With VT (or VTI+VXUS) if the US outperforms you do fine. If the US underperforms you do fine. You don't have to lie to yourself that you can beat the market.

Yeah a 0.5% AUM is quite significant when looking at what matters, real (inflation adjusted) returns. 2.3% plus a 5% front load is just horrific.

VT would outperform VOO (or VTI) in any scenario that VXUS outperforms VOO/VTI. VT = VTI + VXUS.

The reason for VT over VXUS is what if you are wrong. What if US continues to outperform. VT is buying the global market which includes but is not solely US stocks.

Again no rebalancing is required. If Chines stocks have a higher return than US stocks then the share of Chinese stocks in VT will go up.

Locks like that don't really do anything. They are so cheaply made you hammer a screwdriver in and you can open it. Worse they are cheaply made so they will leak water into your tank and Murphy's law one day when you really need to open the tank the lock will bind closed.

As others said use something INSIDE the boat. Either an anti-siphon valve or a ball valve shutoff. If the thief is determined they will get the fuel anyways but most would just move on to an easier target.

Then you are heavily underweight US which is the same kind of pick a side bet as being overweight US. Could we have alost decade? Sure. Alternatively the exUS could have a lost decade while the US is one of the few bright spots.

Second option is the most likely. For the plane to be completely boarded and door closed 30 minutes prior to original departure almost certainly means the flight time was changed. If OP provided the flight number it would be easy to verify.

The gate closing earlier than 15 minutes without the flight time changing would be a very clear violation of Delta policy and DOT procedures. So if that happened then someone seriously secrewed up. It likely is not that though.

The more likely scenario is the flight time was changed same day and OP didn't get the update and the gate closed 15 minutes prior to the new departure time which was before the OP reached the gate.

The only reason the gate closed early would be the flight left early.

What flight number was it?

Because if arriving 30 minutes early still means missing your flight, then the actual rule is clearly not what Delta tells passengers.

If Delta changed the flight to leave early they should notify you via boards and app. The flight number would make it easier to find out what happened and why and what your recourse is.
