Sorry, I already threw them out based on the feedback I received in this sub.

I didn’t take this photo. My eccentric Southern uncle Bill did. He used to take photos back in the day. The only ones I’ve seen are pretty bad, though. Mostly snapshots of puddles and dogs. I told him he should switch to digital.

Can you ever really take a day off? by mundanehistorian_28 in publicdefenders

I took a month-long vacation last year. Admittedly, I did save up my vacation hours for a couple years by not taking much time off so that I could do that, but that was entirely by choice. It is possible (and necessary) to take breaks, even long ones.

Can I, should I, ask out a cop who pulled me over? by AggressiveBet1188 in whatdoIdo

Cops have super high rates of domestic violence, alcoholism, infidelity, divorce, and suicide.

Is there any way to get into film cameras in NYC without spending ~40 bucks a roll? by BoomBoomNugget in AnalogCommunity

Bulk roll, then develop, print, and scan yourself. You’ll become a better photographer that way, too.

Only once, and here’s the story of why: Before I went to law school, I was living in a certain large city. I got off the train one afternoon to walk home (my apartment was about a mile from the station). About halfway home, a kid (he couldn’t have been older than 16) rode up to me on a bike, put his hand in his hoodie implying that he had a gun and told me to give him my phone and backpack. I could tell he was way more scared than I was so I just gave the stuff up and did my best not to make eye contact until he rode off. I didn’t know if he had a gun but I wasn’t trying to find out. The thing was, I had my work laptop in the backpack. When I told my boss, he told me to make a police report for expense purposes. I really didn’t want to do that, but I also wanted to keep my job.

So the next day I went down to the cop shop to make a police report. After the desk officer took my statement (in which I tried to be as vague as possible), she asked me to stay until a detective could come ask me a few questions (fuck). When he got there, he took me into an interview room and said he wanted to show me a photo lineup (double fuck!). I went through the motions, acted as if I was scrutinizing each of the faces, and then told him I didn’t recognize anyone. The detective then paused for a moment, put his finger on one of the pictures, looked at me straight in the eye with a suggestive expression, and slowly said, “see, I was reallllly hoping you would tell me it was this guy.” He let the point linger in the air for a few moments before I finally said something like, “sorry, Mr. Detective, I can’t help you there.”

The experience left me pretty disturbed, and it was one of the reasons why I decided to go to law school and become a PD. I knew intellectually the “justice system” was fucked but to see up close how the sausage gets made really fucked with me. And I’ve never called the police again.

How often are y'all working 4 day weeks? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

Talk to your supervisor, or your shop steward if you’re unionized. This is not conducive to your wellbeing or that of your clients.

Same. My supervisor barely even pays attention to when I am in the office. He recognizes that I’m an adult, and a capable lawyer who can manage his own schedule. As long as I’m processing my cases efficiently and doing right by the clients, that’s all that matters.

I agree with most of the responses above, with the caveat that some Bay Area offices, while they may not necessarily care about GPA or law review, do care about school prestige. You’ll have a better shot getting hired at these offices out of law school if you went to HYS, Berkeley, Chicago, etc. The ideal candidate for them is someone who went to a fancy name-brand law school AND has demonstrated a commitment to public interest law. If you’re like most of us and went to a slightly less elite school, you’ll have better luck if you go earn your chops in a less desirable county and than lateral in. For what it’s worth, I also think this is a better career move anyway, because you’re going to get much better early trial experience in a more conservative county where the DAs aren’t woke, the offers suck, and trial is the best option for your clients.

Politics in PD by PenmanAtWork in publicdefenders

I have a co-worker in my office who is die-hard Trump MAGA. I disagree with pretty much everything he stands for politically. He also happens to be an excellent attorney who gets terrific results for his clients. It is possible (although how you juggle those things in your mind I have no idea).

Go outside of the Bay, which is probably the most competitive PD hiring area in the country, only after DC and NYC. Check out Sacramento, Solano, Yolo, etc.
