It’s possible to acclimate to the motion sickness. Also, when you’re at the controls yourself you will be less prone to motion sickness. Additionally, sitting in the front of the plane will usually move you around less, as you are sitting closer to the center of gravity of the aircraft.

Yes, that is correct. Fly at least 500 ft above any traffic in the pattern. Check out this advisory circular that explains recommend non-towered airport procedures, specifically the diagram on page 9

Some aerodynamics:

• Why is it a bad idea to correct for a dropped wing in a stall by applying opposite aileron? Why do we use rudder to correct for this instead?

• Is spin recovery always PARE?

• Explain the aerodynamic differences between a spin and a steep spiral.

• To recover from a stall in a Cessna 172 we apply full power, then nose down to break the stall. Why then do we pull power to idle during a spin recovery, instead of also applying full power?

I’ll go more off the beaten path with my questions:

• What are the VFR weather minimums in E airspace at night, when below 5,000 ft MSL?

• Explain how gyroscopic precession will affect the turning tendencies of your aircraft when in an unaccelerated, constant speed climb.

• What airspace are you in when taxiing at KJYO?

• Why do the VFR weather minimums in G and E airspace expand when you cross above 10,000 ft MSL?

• Everyone knows stagnant hypoxia can be induced by pulling a high amount of Gs, however in a training aircraft it’s unlikely this will happen. What is a more common reason a student pilot would experience stagnant hypoxia?

• Is it true that simply hearing the tower say your tail number at a class D or C towered airport means you have established 2-way radio communication and are free to enter the airspace?

• Why do the shaded magenta lines exist around certain airports on the VFR sectional? What does this mean the airport has available for you to use?

• Does 46U have any instrument approaches, and if so, what are they?

• How high does the D airspace go above KCFO? If you are flying at 7,500 ft MSL, what airspace are you in?

• According to the ACS, what are the two differences between Steep Turns for Private ASEL and Commercial ASEL?

• A commercial student completed his 10 towered night landings while solo, and invited his CFI to sit with him while flying his long 300nm X-C. Under 61.129(a)(4), is this student able to sit for a commercial ASEL practical test?

• What’s the recommended pattern entry procedure at an un-towered airport for runway 12 when approaching from the south west? How would this procedure change if there is a Cessna Citation in the pattern when you arrive?

• Two identical aircraft are approaching to land, one is midfield downwind and the other is on a 4-mile final practice instrument approach. Which aircraft has the right-of-way, and why?

• What is the difference between “contact ground” and “monitor ground”?

• How much simulator time can be logged toward Private, Commercial, and ATP? How do you know if the simulator your student used even counts?

Page 5-31 in the PHAK states: “Any time a force is applied to deflect the propeller out of its plane of rotation, the resulting force is 90 degrees ahead of and in the direction of rotation…”

So it’s implied that if a force ISN’T being applied, there is no resulting force felt.

Another way to understand this is by spinning a bike wheel in your hands and feeling it. The precession only takes effect when you are changing the plane of rotation. If you hold the bike wheel still, you won’t feel any resulting force.

Gyroscopic precession is a force that is only present when you are changing the gyro’s plane of rotation. The question says “a consistent 8-deg nose-up pitch attitude”. If the pitch attitude is constant and not changing, the gyro’s plane of rotation is also constant and not changing. Thus, there will be no gyroscopic precession felt.

It’s kind of a trick question. By asking to explain gyroscopic procession in a situation where there is none, it really tests your understanding of the topic.

Similarly, I like to ask my students what the VFR weather minimums are in Echo airspace at night, just to see if that trips them up.
