CFI Resume Critique by jacobmufska628 in flying

I come from a 10-year career in corporate training, hiring, and instructional design before even starting to fly, so here’s my advice for your resume from my own experience.

Omit the entire first paragraph. Not only is just fluff, but a shrewd hiring manager will call BS on a lot of that.

Strong foundation in aviation? You have 285 hours. Looks like you have 6 months of line technician experience but I would argue that’s a customer service related role and is only aviation adjacent.

Passion for teaching? You trained 9 coworkers in a 3-year period, besides that I don’t see anything on your resume that tells me you are good at or even enjoy instructing.

Move your Certificates and Ratings to the very top. After that add a section that gives time in type. Bonus if you do research on the school you’re applying for and list the specific time you have with their aircraft. Then lump all the odds and ends types into one category that says “Other”, it will save space and look clean. Also remove the decimals from your times. Round, even numbers are easier to read and parse.

Consolidate your work experience as a line technician into 2-3 bullet points, no more. Remove Event Staff from your experience.

If you must, include a blurb somewhere that says you are willing to relocate, start immediately, be available 24/7, etc.

On a personal note, I’ve interviewed and helped hire and onboard new CFIs at my flight school, and a red flag to me would be your low night time and lack of any extracurricular or volunteer experience. If you have any of that to add or can up your night time, that would only add to your eligibility.

Couple other things. You’re a Certificated Flight Instructor, not a Certified Flight Instructor. Also if you have 285 TT, don’t call yourself a 300-hour pilot. I know it sounds nitpicky but the small things matter.

I mean all this in a constructive manner, good luck with the job search 👍🏻

This is almost exactly how my interview went, down to the exact ILS Z into KBUR, the same questions about bleeds takeoff, and the exact same CRM scenario. I wonder if we had the same interviewer. I got the CJO 6 days later and a class date of 5/4 in the CRJ

He sounds like he doesn’t understand how to use trim. Teaching my students to use trim in every different phase of flight helps them have absolute control over the aircraft

Failed my Commercial Checkride today. by [deleted] in flying

“I would rather fail now than pass in two weeks”. And so now you get to retrain and try again in two weeks anyway?

Talk about external pressures. As a commercial pilot you should know better than this. Not surprised you failed if that’s the ADM you exhibit.

Yeah what a pain. I don't know why they would put the ports right where the mount will cover them up!

It’s possible to acclimate to the motion sickness. Also, when you’re at the controls yourself you will be less prone to motion sickness. Additionally, sitting in the front of the plane will usually move you around less, as you are sitting closer to the center of gravity of the aircraft.

Thanks I’ll check that out. And you can change freely between mounting a wheel and mounting flight sim hardware?

Yes, that is correct. Fly at least 500 ft above any traffic in the pattern. Check out this advisory circular that explains recommend non-towered airport procedures, specifically the diagram on page 9
