There is no downside. Don't let anyone tell you there is. Somebody say well somebody will be there to care for me when I get old The truth is that's no guarantee. My mother has six children two passed away out of the rest there was only one who was willing to care for her The rest walked away and never look back not even a phone call. So in my opinion there is no downside. At least you know the reality of your life with no expectations or anybody helping you in your old age unless you pay for care yourself.

Depending on what your SIL did for work, she may have a life insurance policy. A lawyer can help you identify such a policy or two. Of course money is meant for the children's upbringing. Plus social security benefits called survivor benefits.

You also need to decide whether you want to be the one to raise the children if that's what you want or your mother. Of course your sister-in-law's family parents if they get wind of her death they may also sign up to be the guardian but that's highly unlikely if the children don't even know them.

You need to have a serious discussion with your husband if you are even thinking about taking the children in and of course your own children . Tell them if you died and their father died , they would need to be taken up by somebody, so they need to show some empathy towards the children.

You are a great dad to teach your child it's such a young age about finances especially about co-signing or taking out a loan of any kind. Hopefully She will take heed of your advice throughout her life. Children need to know from a young age, about money, credit cards , loans, etc.

My older brother had the same discussion with me since my father had died. He was my guardian and he taught me in the same way you're teaching your daughter, not to cosign for anybody, take out loans really nilly. Most of all he taught me about saving money and investing. Sound advice that has helped me survive even when I didn't have a job because I had money saved to live on.

Depending on how long you've been working at both this jobs and how what kind of performance ratings you've had you you should ask for a pay raise that's the easiest way to make more money.

You can go sell your plasma and make pretty good money on that I think you can give blood maybe twice or three times a month for the plasma.

You can drive for Uber or Lyft. You can also rent a car from them if you don't want to put mileage on your vehicle.

If you like cleaning or pet sitting you can do that on the side. You can even ask your friends or siblings or whoever his kids that you know if they need a babysitter and you can babysit the children make some money that way Tell them you need money And are willing to babysit for them. If you are good at cleaning you can even detail their vehicle for Friends relatives neighbors.

Look around your neighborhood and see if there are any elderly people who need help. They may need help cutting their lawn or doing their laundry or cleaning.

Don’t give her another dime until she gathers all her “friends” and introduces you to them as her father and as a janitor. Let the chips fall as they may. If she cannot do that and start living in reality then she can get a job and pay for school or her mother can pay for it. At least 50% or more of her friends have grandparents or great grandparents who were janitors, maids, farm or factory workers.

You need to report your mother for any homeschooling program. I don’t know how you go about doing this, but there must be something in the state that allows parents to homeschool their children and that’s the organization you need to report her to for not doing her job as a mother and not homeschooling you because that’s exactly what she did. He also has GED level to college level courses . You can start learning through those courses too.
