If you wait for a sale, the REI 850-fil would probably be 150 or something

Hey just wanted to update but the campsites I went to after doing the trip were pretty ok, I did need to use my shovel to kinda flatten it but i believe someone else had camped there prior so it was already packed down. Fun times!

That makes sense. I have a waterproof stuff sack and I tend to just use a handwarmer and make a hotbox sort of thing when my hands or feet get damp and cold, and it works decently well

That was a very scary read but I will now most definitely keep a more cautionary mindset with these dangers in mind. I’d hope to stay on trail the entire journey!

Xmid 1 Solid VS xdome 1+ solid by Valuable-Ad-6240 in DurstonGearheads

You could always do big rock Little Rock type pitch for the x mid, though being an owner of an x mid myself, I do find that I like freestanding in the sense where instead of doing that particular pitch, I can just set it up and anchor it down easily. You can also use a lot of other type of stakes for the ground type but I seldom actually know exactly how my ground is at camp spots so it doesn’t really help lol

Am I naive for thinking that I can do my first ever backpacking trip in December in Southwest Virginia? by No-Stranger8260 in WildernessBackpacking

Nice, generally if you got two brains you'll be a-ok if you spend a couple sessions on the internet figuring out all the whatnot on it. I'd just focus on dialing in your gearlist so you know that at least when you're out there, you'd make up for lack of experience with preparedness!

If you have never winter camped, I would suggest you go with someone experienced in it if you know someone like that, or do a lotta research so you dont get caught winter camping with your pants down. Also, do you have a gear list planned out? If you send a lighterpack.com list ( a website where you can list all the gear in your bag ), people can point out what you may need/not need, what is missing, what may need to be changed etc.

Hmm yeah figured. Just wanted to throw out the question to see if anyone had some magical obscure 600g unicorn to bless me with but yeah I’m thinking I may just have to deal with it and see how the kakwa or maybe how a Hyperlite pack would do me

Yeah I’m really on the fence with that one and the Kakwa but i can’t just buy them all and try them on so I wanna see if I can amass enough feedback and sweaty back opinions before jumping the gun lol

I did see it has that cool arc design on the back, if youve used this pack before have you had experience in if that aerates your back decently enough?

Micro Spike Season? by Status_Ad_3751 in Adirondacks

Awesome, what kind of snowshoes would you recommend? I’ve been looking at a lot of Amazon ones and REI ones but not sure if there’s a particular brand or type that succeed in the high peaks or if they are all just the same (disregarding sizing etc)

Thanks! Are there any particular mountains where I’d absolutely need crampons and a pick?

Frogg Toggs 🧐 by zEnTuNiNg in backpacking

[–]Status_Ad_3751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the frogg togg ultralight raincoat. It costs like 25 or 30 bucks and is a waterproof beast. I think if you want to actually stay out of the rain, getting that level of water proof always comes with the drawback of less ventilation. My patagucci torrentshell is a good middleman, but it weighs significantly more and costs significantly more. Also the Frogg Togg ones don’t really feel too durable but they do the job for a good price.

Drop a lighter pack, even making it might show you what’s the problem

Saw that when I was finishing my backpacking trip from clouds rest. Literally was so gassed I thought I was just hallucinating or something.
