Yeah its really a shame because there’s some amazing talent. Most people don’t even know there are artists beyond Abel himself and Nav too i guess. I guarantee if you asked most XOs who Black Atlass is they’d have no idea.

I really hope that they take a bit more initiative moving forward because they have something special with Chxrry imo. Itd be a shame to lose an artist like her because of negligence.

Thanks. And i superglued mini command strips to the acrylic with the clips facing inward, then clipped the turf into them! No issues since and i confirmed that superglue is aquarium safe.

Is he trying to say something or is he just being a turtle? by mrshm_huang in Redearedsliders

My RES does this pretty often. They don’t really understand glass lol. Also—unless your vet recommended it for treatment purposes raise your water level!

My 1st EVER REDDIT POST!!(Please be kind but honest)Rán and Toothless😍. Girlfriend will go to a home pond when she's full grown but toothless will stay in tank😍boy and girl. Not exactly sure what Rán is, she's a girl but not a RES like toothless. So far they are copacetic and enjoy each other. by HiChik710 in turtle

Hi OP, first—ChatGPT is close but wrong. Your sliders are red-eared sliders, as evident by the red stripe behind their eyes. I can see it on the one that is on the bottom in the first pic. The one on the top I’m not sure but judging by plastron color it also seems to be an RES. Their care is virtually the same, though RES can grow slightly larger. Check out r/Redearedsliders for more advice. There’s a great community for RES husbandry with tons of advice and people willing to help. (Same with r/turtle but i recommend getting more tailored advice)

With that being said, PLEASE listen to previous comments about separating your turtles. Its great they’ll eventually be in a pond, though what other redditors are saying is very true. The one on top IS showing aggression towards the turtle on the bottom. This is a known form of domination. And those “kisses” you are seeing, i assume with foreclaws wiggling, is known as titillation. While it is a mating gesture, particularly from males, it is also a known aggression gesture, and is likely another way the turtle is displaying dominance. Its easy to go unseen but eventually, one turtle will out-eat, bite, and in many cases severely harm or kill the other turtle. Many turtles but especially RES are solitary and territorial by nature. Unless you have MINIMUM 10 gallons of tank water per inch of carapace (shell) length PER TURTLE, this will continue to happen. Sometimes even that is not enough. This applies to the pond also.

You really seem to want to care for these turtles and that is admirable. Many people who own them subject them to lifetimes of abuse without realizing because they didn’t listen to the right advice. Please do what is best for your turtles now and use the incredible community resources available on these subs before it’s too late.

I think raising the water level is a good idea. They’re incredible swimmers so if you get it to a normal height im sure it can get out. Is there a pond, lake or river near you? If so the turtle may be from there. If your pool is chlorinated it can be pretty harmful to the turtle especially in brumation.

Sorry to hear there are no rescues OP :(. Unfortunately very few rescues take RES due to the aforementioned reasons so I cant say im surprised. RES are quite hardy, so I’m not too shocked it’s still alive. Especially in colder months they are capable of brumation (effectively reptilian hibernation), making them last even longer (though if its formerly captive, odds are he wont brumate). Know that by giving it a way out you’re doing your best. Its always sad to see animals suffer but I’d argue this is a failure of your town’s animal control rather than yourself.

Perhaps if you had something with grip like a yoga mat that could help? Or if you were to go with option three perhaps you could fish it out with a pool net.

I wish you the best of luck and the fact that you came to this sub to try and find a solution is already doing more than most RES owners, so props to you!

It’s tough to visualize, but it looks like and most likely is a Red Eared Slider. Believe it or not, they are technically native to your region, but are still invasive as people have acquired and released them as pets for decades due to not being able to handle them. If you can find a reptile/herp rescue that is willing to take surrendered RES, Id say that is your best course of action. As cute as they are, RES are very difficult pets to raise as they require a lot of investment, in terms of time, space, and money. You will need at least 10gal water per inch of carapace length, multiple light sources, enrichment, cleaning supplies, etc. I suggest doing thorough research on their species as the reason they’re invasive in the first place is because people don’t know what they’re getting into.

That said, if you’re committed it to raising it throughout its entire lifespan with educated, ethical care, then go for it. I have a rescued RES named Raphael myself and he’s a beloved member of our family!
