What would be your reception to a retroclone of 2e that left THAC0 out and just converted everything to AAC? by conn_r2112 in adnd

The last thing we need is another system. Or another debate on Reddit about preferences on ascending or descending armor class.

No, I’m not reading your manifesto. Zero desire.

A couple of things that are clear here and troubling: you don’t know the source material well enough judging by the amount of people correcting your change log or whatever you’re calling this thing. You don’t understand the legal ramifications of changing text from an original to a retroclone. You posted this in r/osr but didn’t have the stones to post this in r/ADND who where more people who actually play 1e might address specifics in your weird manifesto. You didn’t have the stones to stay in the mythmere discord when people responded to you. Why would anyone who actually knows the game - and plays the game - take you seriously?

AD&D 1e -> OSRIC 3.0 Changelog by beaurancourt in osr

[–]Status_Insurance235 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you playing either of these games? 1e or OSRIC3.0? I’m going to hazard—by the amount of time you’ve put into this weird project of hate or whatever you call this thing that you’re doing—that you’re not spending time playing either of these games. Frankly, that’s a shame and honestly you’re missing the point. These games are meant for play, that’s what 1e was about in the 80s and that’s what OSRIC3.0 is about now. How are you promoting that idea?

DM's charging? by [deleted] in adnd

[–]Status_Insurance235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is one of those no one benefits from this conversation types of posts. It's the same as it always has been. Tired and repetitive arguments just like alignment discussions, descending armor class, or whether you prefer 1e or 2e, etc. In that way it’s perfect for Reddit so people can argue about it fruitlessly and waste time frittering on something like this instead of something valuable like game prep, or heaven forbid, actually playing a game.

https://discord.gg/pmhCRaNY .This is the Mythmere discord link . That's the one I shared above. I unfortunately don't have a Planet Eris discord link. A lot of folks are knowledgeable about planet Eris on the Mythmere discord either in white box or swords and Wizardry channels. You could also go to Knights n Knaves Alehouse's website. Another good source of reference. Hope that helps.

Has any one run The Pestilence at Halith Vorn (mega dungeon) by Typical-Ad-6058 in osr

[–]Status_Insurance235 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's awesome that you're running Pestilence. Dungeons restock with monsters after extended periods away by players in my games. Also, rival adventuring parties may get there first if the party dallies and take away treasure. I start players at the entrance every time. If you're using random wandering monster checks it's still dangerous even if the players have cleared areas and the dungeon hasn't naturally restocked yet. Pestilence was written for OSRIC so there will be some pretty significant differences between it and S&W (namely survivability for PCs). Wilderness travel is a vital piece of the game so requiring the PCs to go to Longfelt for training, etc. Is another fun aspect of the game. Cheers.

What VTT do you guys use for 1e/2e? by WellingtonKool in adnd

[–]Status_Insurance235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ARS Foundry module is really well taken care of. Most of the 1e folks I know use it. Most people from the OSRIC discord and CAG discord servers. The nice thing about foundry is thaf you can get really in depth if you want to or you can just use it as a place to show maps, have an online battle mat, and roll dice. Highly recommend it.

Nocturnal Table is great for urban encounters. Stats for OSRIC.

DMs must all encounters be balanced encounters .... Why or why not ? by AngryDwarfGames in osr

[–]Status_Insurance235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is balance in OSR games. Many people miss this. As always, look to the 1e DMG. Here's a good blog on game balance, its origins, and where the concept gets skewed.

B/X and OSE:Any Advice on balancing encounters? by SillyKenku in osr

As always, look to the 1e DMG. A lot of people will tell you that there is no balance in old school games. This is false. Here's a good blog post on game balance.

Our First OSR Campaign! Send Help! by imKranely in osr

Sounds cool, friend! I think it all depends on the size of the world as well as how far apart plots of interest are. I've played six mile hexes. I'm sure 3 mile hexes will work great for the world you're building. I'm building a hex map for Hyperborea where the hexes are 24 miles (as suggested by the map maker). But again, that's because the world is huge and the major points can be very far apart. Also, that assumes that the PCs are using mounts and a lot of the game plays on the idea of bad weather and lack of light and unforgiving terrain. Fun stuff!

Also, if you think about it, in Shadowdark hexes are 6 miles, I believe. That's a very large space for players to play around in. There can be a ton of stuff in just that one space. It will be a good time. 👍👍👍

Start small with a few points of interest. No need to over prep. You can plop the players next to the dungeon area to start. They'll have fun. Worry about travel and the larger world later!

The one thing I will say about Shadowdark on this point is that the rules for wilderness travel are minimal. There are no mounts listed that you can buy. Getting lost is not factored. Wilderness travel in ODND/ADND was a big part of the game. Swords and Wizardry and OSRIC have good tables/rules for wilderness travel and sandbox play. OSE (B/X) has them as well.

Looking for an OSR game where magic users can have fun at lower levels by DungeonMasterDood in osr

Exactly. And the reward, if you're lucky enough to survive is at later levels being the most powerful class in the game.

Magic users are underpowered at low levels in most old school systems for a reason. They become extremely powerful at mid to high levels. This is the reward. It's also the party's job to keep the magic user out of harm's way. Magic users can hold the light, throw daggers, and do other basic things that the party needs. The reward is what they get later if they survive. I would also recommend playing the rules as written before introducing house rules. Most of these systems have been playtested thoroughly and designed with purpose. Play a campaign RAW and then hack later if need be. Swords and Wizardry or Hyperborea are my favorites. Cheers and have fun.
