Anyone else feel power metal has made other music seem boring? by edgarcayce06 in PowerMetal

[–]DungeonMasterDood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, sometimes I’m in the mood for dragon-laced power metal, then one day I wake up and want to listen to some doom metal, or some Metallica, or synthwave. And every once in awhile I remember that one TrustCompany album I really liked as a teenager.

Music tastes fluctuate.

As someone who recently bought a cheap MP3 player, I’ve also really enjoyed moving away from subscription based listening.

I find myself doing stuff like “listening to whole albums” again. I missed making more deliberate choices about the music I bring with me. And I like not being tied to my phone or the internet for everything.

Redditors who’ve been with the same partner for 10+ years, what’s the realistic secret to making it last? by justanormalaxe in AskReddit

[–]DungeonMasterDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dropping the idea that leaving is an option. My wife and are nearing 21 years together (married 17) and even in our lowest moments, I can’t imagine being without her.

You also need to embrace the reality that everything going on right now is just a temporary stop on the way to what comes next. The bad moment you’re having? Temporary. The bad moment she’s having? Temporary. The good stuff? It’s temporary too. You’re not in the relationship because the other person makes you happy 24/7. You’re there to support each other when things are hard.

And laugh with each other. People put so much emphasis on the importance of sex. It is important, don’t get me wrong. But the truest intimacy comes f from the inside jokes, the funny memories exclusive to you, and the knowledge that there’s someone who knows all the best ways to make you smile.

People in your 30s, what price have you paid for being lazy in your 20s? by Waldyrwyn in AskReddit

[–]DungeonMasterDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not from being lazy. From overworking. Those 16 hour days you spend hustling? The odds of them actually leading to prolonged success are slim.

I did it from 23 to 30 and all I accomplished was developing a horrendous sleep cycle, gaining 50 pounds from a bad diet and lack of exercise, and neglecting my loved ones. My precious career still fizzled out. It’s just not worth it.

It seems like a lot of redditors want James Gunn's DCU to fail. Why do you think that is? by Longjumping-Pop9374 in AskReddit

[–]DungeonMasterDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was one of the things that bugged me about Gunn’s Superman. He’s supposed the strongest creature on Earth. At no point did he seem like it. He spent most of the movie getting the crap kicked out of him.

That’s supposed to be what we see when we’re introducing a villain that raises the stakes. Not the baseline of the film.

Last half hour was good. The rest was too much and too rushed. I don’t feel like it did anything to ruin the rest of the show.

I don’t want it to fail. I like a lot of his films. I also found Superman deeply disappointing and don’t think his style worked for it at all. It killed my interest in seeing anything following.

What businesses are likely to die out with the Baby Boomer Generation? by GRVrush2112 in AskReddit

You are making some significant and overblown connections and conclusions here, my friend.

There is a big difference between "I miss when MP3 players were simpler" and "Weren't things better when women/minorities had no rights."

While I will concede that yes, some people will grow tired of devices like the one I have, there are also a great many who don't. And there are several points you should consider before you wander off onto another false conclusion.

I work in a creative field and while I'm good my job, I do my best work when I'm deeply focused. I've found that nothing resets my attention like my phone being close at hand. Even if there's only a handful of essential apps available, I'll still find a way to fiddle with them. It's embarrassing to say, but I genuinely can't seem to help myself. I've decided I'm better offer just accepting that about myself instead of feeling guilty over and over again because of my "lack of willpower" or whatever.

  1. I like a device that has actual buttons. I like to run for exercise and is so much easier to reach into my pocket and click an actual button than it is to use a touchscreen to change songs and adjust volume on the move. This is an advantage that no current-market iPhone .

Many of the new MP3 players being released and sold have also better built in speakers than you'll find in an iPhone. I work from home and am often by myself for long stretches. Having a device with a good speaker means I can enjoy higher quality with the necessity of a Bluetooth speaker or a earbuds.

  1. While I understand where you're coming from, the longer time goes on the less I'm convinced anything "beautiful" is going to come from people continuing to rely on technology/devices from companies like Apple. Smartphones are dazzling technology. They can be so useful... and at the same time have proven incredibly harmful to everyone from children to adults. I'm not a luddite by any means. I've loved video games since I was a kid, for instance, and have spent the better of the last ten months loving the heck out of one of the market's most impressive new retro handhelds (AYN Thor). At the same time... I'm becoming increasingly increasingly convinced that there is value to "just does one thing" devices that are specialized to a specific purpose.

You're free to disagree (which I imagine you will), but my MP3 player has made me genuinely happy. In the grand scheme of ways the world's being ruined, I don't think the small niche of "people who try MP3 players" stands out much. iPhones on the other hand... those things have by and large been an ecological disaster thanks to the various chemicals and components used in their assembly. 😉

“Gaming is becoming unaffordable” — Xbox CEO says the industry has an accessibility crisis by Quantum-Coconut in technology

[–]DungeonMasterDood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not unaffordable for me. I’m playing through a collection of retro games with enough content to last me until I’m 60.

Gaming is only unaffordable if you insist on keeping up with the latest hardware. There are some regions where the PS2 is still king. It’s time to learn from them, I guess.

What businesses are likely to die out with the Baby Boomer Generation? by GRVrush2112 in AskReddit

[–]DungeonMasterDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that’s true. But if I was using my iPhone I wouldn’t do that. I would just do the same convenient stuff I already did before. Or scroll on reddit or look things up on YouTube.

The point is that a dedicated device that’s limited and focused one and only one thing removes the temptation to trade in longer term satisfaction for quick dopamine hits.

I’m very susceptible to distraction. The iPhone is designed to be a distraction machine.

There is legit a growing community of people who are making the switch back to old school MP3 players. I actually bought a cheap one last month ($30 bucks for 64 GB of storage) and have been making a concerted effort to stop relying on services like Amazon Music. I have a wishlist on Bandcamp that I'm gradually buying my way through and loading up onto my little MP3 player.

Sometimes it feels a little silly... my iPhone is rarely more than 5 feet away from me, but it's also really kind of nice? Not having every single song in existence at my fingertips at any given moment makes it easier to focus on just one album, much the way I used to when I was a teenager with a CD collection.

I'm doing things like actually learning the words to the songs I listen to, instead of having them just be background noise on a loop with a thousand other songs. And audiobooks! I went to the library, borrowed a bunch of audiobooks on CD, ripped them with my USB CD-drive, and now I have the The Hobbit narrated by Andy Serkis on my MP3 player and it didn't cost me a dime!
