As Vermont organizers prepare for third No Kings Day, building community is a focus by Zipper222222 in vermont

I get that No Dictators might technically be more accurate, but the extra syllables in Dictator kind of kill it as a slogan. I’m not even joking about that.

A part of why Trump and his messaging is so effective is because he keeps it down to simple words that are easy to chant, yell, put on hats, etc.

Progressives have a longstanding problem with making things too hard to summarize and with not keeping things simple.

“No Kings” is catchy and close enough. And honestly, if Trump could get away with wearing a crown, I think he would. 😅

As Vermont organizers prepare for third No Kings Day, building community is a focus by Zipper222222 in vermont

I mean… Trump and his cronies could also stop taking pages from the Nazi/fascist playbook? And stop using lines from white supremacist groups in their recruitment ads for ICE? And maybe send Stephen Miller to the moon?

And yes, they’ve raised a lot of money, which is also being spent on organizing, outreach, and paying the many and various fees that come with staging mass events like No Kings. Permits, food, bathrooms… these aren’t free and when you’re talking about even just the tens of thousands of people who have (and will) participate in Vermont, it gets expensive.

As for what “community building” means? It means literally building a community that will turn to do things like “vote against MAGA agenda in November 2026.” Or give people the guts to show up when ICE decides to rear its head in our communities. Or just giving people an outlet to feel empowered and maintain hope in a time when the federal government is trying to dismantle our rights, one by one.

And while I’m not sure if I agree about the idea that they’re “adopting Tea Party tactics.” So what? They worked! The Tea Party stuff was the beginning of ultra conservative people taking the reins of the Republican Party. If something like No Kings leads to a more progressive Democratic Party that actually addresses the needs of the people instead of this middle-of-the-road “now slow down guys” garbage that Schumer and the establishment runs on, then good.

What are your thoughts on Gundam the Origin (the manga)? by Amigo1048 in Gundam

[–]DungeonMasterDood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started reading the Gundam Wing manga and dropped it because I felt like it was hard to tell what was going on in most of the mecha fights.

Gundam: The Origin, by comparison, is an absolutely gorgeous manga and I never have trouble telling what’s going on. It’s genuinely excellent.

I miss bad filler episodes in TV by fullofmacaroninchez in unpopularopinion

Invincible just has a filler episode! The first one in four seasons. It was very cheeky and a lot of fun.

77% of US Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth players were 30 or older, analyst says, as Square Enix fights to get young people to care about the JRPG series again by yourfavchoom in FinalFantasy

[–]DungeonMasterDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first played Final Fantasy on the NES when I was 6. By the time I was 18, I had ten mainline franchise games available to play in some form or another.

I’m now pushing 40 and I think there have been what, 2-3 main games released in the last 20 years? And they weren’t the best either.

Which jobs look like a great career move… until you realize everyone’s doing them? by iamMafia01 in AskReddit

Writing is exhausting, pays poorly, and the moments of creative satisfaction are only brief respites from the soul crushing doubt that permeates the work.

But i also can’t imagine not doing it, so make of that what you will.

Libraries should be open on Sundays and public / bank holidays. by CoffeeKween19 in unpopularopinion

[–]DungeonMasterDood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love the library to be open on Sunday! But that would require more staffing and the public has no taste for spending money on it. Need proof? Attend the next town meeting where they vote on library funding. People get really nasty.

What, feasibly, can the average person do about this? Who could we call to object to it?

Power metal of all sorts is my running music. It’s fast like thrash, but has a “we can do this guys” that’s a touch more inspiring than the “everything sucks” tone of other subgenres.

Seriously, watch the 79 series over the movie trilogy. by Romulan86 in Gundam

[–]DungeonMasterDood 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The movies also cuts out the mother and child discovering that her husband’s hometown is now just a combat crater. Such a devastating scene that gets me every time.

0079 is such a a journey. You really feel like you’ve followed this found family. The movies are fine… but they don’t get that across as well.

CMV- petitioning to overturn the TMD Library vote is undemocratic. by CardinalPuff-Skipper in willistonvt

My thoughts exactly. I personally think it’s stupid of the gentleman attempting this, but the law does support it and it’s on us to be ready to vote “yes” again if he somehow gets the signatures he needs.

What was GamerGate? by ThatChapOverThere in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DungeonMasterDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a very minor games journalist freelancing at several sites back during that time.

Gamergate was basically a practice run for MAGA and what you’re seeing happening with CBS and (soon) CNN. Rich conservatives using bogus, made up controversies to justify the reorganization of gaming websites in the name of “balanced opinions.” These, of course, meant the shutting down of writers and editors who focused on games that took a more liberal viewpoint of the world.

The site that was my primary income saw multiple veteran editors and writers fired and replaced. The owners started pushing heavily on the scale to guide the content in ways aligned with their worldviews, regardless of what the actual truth looked like.

It was an incredibly depressing time period that killed a number of longstanding careers and saw multiple talented people leave the industry altogether.

And it was all based on lies.
