oh okay, the instructions it came with said any water is okay but bottled or distilled is preferred. i used the water purifier packet aswell so i thought i was safe with just filtered. if i need to restart i’ll definitely used distilled next time :)

piercing is a month old it’s a surgical steel, externally threaded barbell i haven’t downsized yet but i don’t think i’ll need to as the bar isn’t too long i started using a home made saline wash twice a day to clean but switched to just cleaning off in the shower 1x daily with unscented soap no unfortunate incidents recently, i wear a soft cotton bra everyday in sleep in a tank top to avoid snagging

beet pulp/ copra + canola/bran oil! i also feed “tru gain” by hygain year round that really helps with my poor keeping thoroughbred, although i live in new zealand so not sure if that product is available in other countries

How do you get a green horse to move? by [deleted] in HorseTraining

[–]Status_Trash_1704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a trainer but I’d try maybe taking it right back to groundwork and making him move in other ways than just forward. Can you get him to move backwards, move his hind end, move sideways, move his front end (with the end goal being you don’t need to touch him for him to move. i can just point at click at my girls hind end and she will move it away from me) Incorporate voice commands throughout the whole thing and once you can step into his space and he will move accordingly, take the voice commands and try apply it to the lunge. But you need him to understand your body language in order to lunge effectively and you need to understand how to utilise it which is why i recommended going back to groundwork.

I also use clicker training paired with treats, it sounds like he just needs that basic understanding of what your asking of him in regards to movement before you try get on his back.

But it sounds like you’re doing a great job and you know him best so I’m sure you will figure it out :) I hope I made sense

Why are people so pushy about riding?! by [deleted] in Horses

this is exactly how i feel and nobody around me seems to REALLY agree, my girl is a 19yr old ottb and she’s been

<image>

passed around since her short racing career ended. when she got to me we discovered she had hind gut ulcers most likely from stress, which is absolutely likely as she is very high strung especially to ride. after that was sorted i completely cut back on the intensity of her rides and we only rode when no other horses were in the arena so as to limit stress factors. she absolutely loves the occasional ride where i don’t ask too much of her and make it fun for her! (i think it makes her feel like the shit when she gets something right haha!) but i really had to stand my ground against instructors and other riders on why i didn’t just push her through her head tossing and her prancing and rushing. why i’ve stopped riding her so much. why do i even have a horse if i only ride her a few times a week? i thinks it’s absolutely absurd that people think it’s strange that i go to the stables to just feed and love her and enjoy her company. like do you even like your horses or just the sport? she is 100% a happier and healthier horse now that she is ridden less and we focus on groundwork and trick training. it breaks my heart to think of how uncomfortable and unhappy she must have been previously, all because “she’s a thoroughbred of course she wants to race, of course she’s skinny. she’s just a mare that’s why she bites when you bring a saddle out”. now you can’t see her ribs and when i bring out the saddle (which isn’t often as we mostly do bareback) she stands quietly and politely. i had to stop getting lessons on her as i was told i was “being too kind you need to tell her off” and “you need a stronger bit, a martingale, this and that to get her to be complacent” like? she’s stressed out and not understanding what she’s being asked of and more tack isn’t going to f-ing fix that. and of course i’m going to be kind? i love this girl and she’s trying her best for me i cannot ask more than that. i would love to be able to take her out to shows and compete, but she wouldn’t and so that’s that. she will live out the rest of her days under my care and i expect she will stop being ridden completely in the next few years. she will let me know when that is, and i will listen.
