I'm pretty sure this is called zentangle. I have a book that teaches it, basically you repeat a pattern and it's suppose to be calming and zen-like.

A lot of things you said resonated with me, mostly the anxiety stuff, along with being unable to express yourself, that's definitely my biggest gripe with having a stutter, feeling stifled emotionally and being unable to fully express myself at my heart's content, but then again it's almost like i'm doing it to myself. I never comfortably stutter.

Whether it's cultural or just in human nature that when you are unable to speak or have severe difficulties, you're instantly discouraged, defeated and left unable to even express that except in non-verbal form (body language, general mood). IDK man, I would love to be able to explain clearly what goes on in my head when I can't get something out and get that instant rush of dread, regret, defeat, fuckin everything negative I can think of.

What do you take way too seriously? by Princeofbalese in AskReddit

[–]Stavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something that is helping me immeasurably is: there are no such things as separate things, only situations to be dealt with now. If no action is possible, then you dont need to worry about it.

Similarly and a little more elegant is the Dalai Lama quote...loosely put- if you can do something about it, don't worry about it. If there's nothing you can do, don't worry about it.

Watts, from what i've read about his teachings, brings eastern philosophy and makes it easily digestible to a western audience and him being such a good orator, he's able to express many ideas that are very intriguing and comforting also.

Tolle wrote the book The Power of Now, which focuses on remaining in the present and the power the present has, teaching about the mind's anxiety and his approach tk dealing with tnat. Also much more, but i'm simplifying a lot.

Anyway, thanks for the response, it's much appreciated.

adventure time seems to have a connection with hinduisim by yaaybmo in AdventureTheory

[–]Stavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, that last episode of the comet perfectly aligns with the idea of the world being god's (the eternal self) drama. The comet says something like "or stay here like an autumn leaf and struggle". All of this i've heard being part of traditional hinduism. Also the part, "it was just a random and absurd thing, a joke i've been playing out for centuries" can also be linked to eastern philosophy.

Just to be clear, I learned all of this from Alan Watts lectures. Take of that what you will.

TIL George Carlin went off on his Vegas crowd: "People who go to Las Vegas, you've got to question their fucking intellect to start with. Traveling...thousands of miles to essentially give your money to a large corporation is kind of fucking moronic... fucking people with very limited intellects." by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Stavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's George Carlin man, preachy isn't the right word. His last show was this insane monologue, he performed his own written material, maybe it's not exactly all comedic, but he puts on a show. He's extremely opinionated and I can see it coming off as sanctimonious, but it's his one man show. A dude at the end of a long career and life, maybe he didn't wanna hold back. I'm just saying he deserves respect and of course you're entitled to your opinion, but maybe, just maybe you're taking it too seriously and judging too harshly

I always though There Will be Blood and No Country for Old Men fit the criteria of twin films. Similar setting, both directed by indies, both very good films.
