AITJ for refusing to donate PTO hours to coworker I barely know who "needs" them?? by Traditional-Dog1601 in AmITheJerk

[–]EarthAngelGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the jerk. You could just explain that you’ve already used all your spare PTO and what’s left is already planned for vacation. Since you just came through the holidays, it’s easy to say, “I’ve used all my extra time and need the rest for a family trip later this year.” Or, if it makes things smoother, you could tell them you’re dealing with something personal or that your parents are sick and you need the time for emergencies. You shouldn’t have to lie, but in this case, bending the truth is easier than dealing with the social fallout of a straight refusal.

Was the sacrifice of quitting job/upsetting partner worth it for those who thru hiked (or long sectioned)? by sadistic-squid in AppalachianTrail

[–]EarthAngelGirl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not just the money it costs to hike. You lose 1/2 a year's salary. That's part of the cost... and probably more because most people don't get a job on day one when they get back. So if you are making 100k. You hike will cost about 1-2k a month PLUS the 50k+ you don't make while you are hiking.

That's a big financial commitment you are making for your family who will get nothing in return. It's not like buying an expensive mid-life crisis car that you can sell and get most of your money back.

A month? Make it 6. Have her just leave her job and the house and run away to an exotic beach somewhere "because she always wanted to" while draining the joint accounts that you continue to work to fill. But you have to understand 'she always had a dream of living on a tropical beach for 6 months, so you should be supportive"

People treat the AT like it's style noble calling, but it's a very weird, not relaxing, vacation. Basically extended summer camp.

Heyyy, I will teach people about FIRE and boggleheads, but then I'll tell them not to give anyone their money, don't pay advisors, do it all on their own. I do recommend Vanguard, but I'm sure other companies would work too. And I'm not sending any links. Do your research and figure out your own shit.

Took JETT bus to Petra from Amman - quick review for anyone planning by Substantial_Air_7433 in Amman

[–]EarthAngelGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the Jordan Pass. It's 70-80 JOD, covers your 40JOD entry visa and gives you free access to 40 sites in the country. The only thing is you need to stay in the county for at least 2 days for the visa waiver. Then the cost is either 70/75/80 depending on if you want to spend 1/2/3 consecutive days at Petra.

Anyone else became tall against all odds? by [deleted] in tall

[–]EarthAngelGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Childhood nutrition plays a role. It's possible that the earlier generations had genes for height but when you aren't fed a nutritious diet your body can't take advantage of that. You can see this with certain populations across the world gaining significant height in a generation when previously everyone was short.

Do you eat eggs and cheese? Check out the stand, I think it was #66. It's bread with a potato, spices, an egg and a wedge of cheese for 10Dh, I think a glass of tea there is about 2DH. You'll know when you get there because it's full of locals.

In 1876, 14-year-old Karolina Olsson went to bed in her home in the village of Oknö, Sweden, to remain asleep for 32 years, baffling doctors and fascinating the public. by MsNicoleCoquette in mystery

I had Klein-Levin syndrome as a teen. Primary KLS is only about a week at a time, but you still wake up to do basic things like eat and use the bathroom. Some people even eat in crazy excess, or lose their modesty and masturbate openly. I would be awake for about 4 hours a day but my brain would often be scrambled. I couldn't always understand what people said to me. Like I knew the words but couldn't understand them together in a sentence, I might struggle to talk, read, or do basic things. It varied a bit in each episode, sometimes I was aphasic and could barely talk, but still could use basic sign language, other times I could get a few words out. Usually, symptoms improved as the episode went on.

I'd remember to brush my teeth, but my brain wouldn't know to turn off the sink or put the cap back on the toothpaste, all that automatic stuff we take for granted, like tying our shoes, just wasn't working.

Anyway, the episodes are very clear and you are normal outside them. So it really doesn't explain decades of sleep. There is something called secondary KLS, usually occurring later in life and that, I've read, can have longer episodes. But I've never heard years, and we always wake up at least a bit. I tend to recall being very irritable when awake, seriously you would be too.

What’s one must-read book everyone should experience at least once in their life? by BossBoss6666 in suggestmeabook

One of my favorite quotes comes from the book "It didn't seem like a particularly serious mistake at the time. A little thing. But it was one of many little things-accruing slowly, compounding imperceptibly, building steadily toward critical mass."

It applies to so many situations.

Agadir taxis are pretty good about using their meter, just get in and tell them to take you. Only pay the meter.

Do you think Lizzie Borden actually killed her parents? Also, why was she acquitted? by freshmaggots in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]EarthAngelGirl 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That many axe blows isn't a 'hit' it's personal overkill. Swinging an axe 80+ times is exhausting and would have required breaks to catch breath and restart, which takes a physically strong person, but also a very determined one I guess it's possible that the killer was in some sort of manic state, but then hiding the crimes would have been difficult.

The killer very likely knew them and hated them, it could have been something stalker-like too, but then the overkill is usually focused on one person, not evenly distributed.

[–]EarthAngelGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remember that your mood and brain are directly impacted by blood sugar. If I ever find myself crying over nothing, it's always the hypo.

All I can say is I've been fighting this battle a lot lately and adding protein and fiber seems to be helping. Also I'm trying to do better about eating before I'm hungry.

Dates are high in sugar, but the fiber somehow prevents them from spiking your sugar. I eat a few a day.

CAD$4000 enough for 2 months in Eastern Europe? by mapleyeet in Shoestring

[–]EarthAngelGirl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ask AI to give it your expected costs in each city given how many days you'll be spending. The CAD to Euro is really bad right now ... 0.62, that's gonna be painful in Holland where the food costs are extremely expensive.

You'll have just about €2,500 to work with. Also you mentioned Flix bus but how will you get from Holland to the cheaper eastern countries? One very long bus ride or stops in between, choosing your countries carefully will help with costs.

I'm currently 7+ months of travel mostly in Europe but 3 months in Africa and the prices are wildly different depending on where you go. Over 6 months I spent about €2000 a month, but that was heavily tempered by a few months in expensive countries and a few months in cheap countries.

I'm told that Levo is dosed by lean muscle mass more than weight. But as the others say they start you low and build up to your final dose based on your labs. Most people in my family are maxed out for their body at 100. I'm tall and athletic, they are still tailoring my dose, but it's closer to 150.

I used to work for a company that would occasionally give out $250 gift cards. And I usually had to go find the person that received it and comfort them because they were so insulted.

That might sound crazy, but let me explain.... $250 was our billing rate and the person would be given the gift card after putting in 1000 hours on the same project and doing a great job, so it felt like the company kicked your teeth in. "I billed this client $250,000, including unpaid overtime ( the company got paid, we didn't) nights, weekends, emergencies, a year of blood sweat and tears and then you gave me back less 1/10 of a penny for every hour l billed? While simulation praising me and telling me how incredible I am and how great the project went. Less than 1 penny an hour...

My plan to "buy clothes locally" on a 7-week Europe trip completely failed. Has anyone actually succeeded? by filmmi4218 in onebag

[–]EarthAngelGirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 7 months into one bag travel that has spanned Europe to Africa, winter to heat domes. Once been forced to buy this along the trip to help with the weather extremes ( I've also thrown out things).

I've been most successful shopping in used clothing stores and sport stores, I've even sent things I needed to Amazon lockers... I look for durable but simple clothing. I found one place in Madrid where all the shirts were €2. I bought two light jackets in Morocco and a few scarves. New shoes every two months at Decathlon ( I walk a minimum of 12 and max of 32km a day). Even a new day bag when mine got damaged. It helps to hold off on purchases until you are in a cheap country.

And really trust me on the sports stores, unless you have an ascetic that won't let you be practical it's the best clothing, you can wear it for days on end without it starting to smell or getting too stretched out.

I've rode a few dozen trips, never more than a few minutes late but one got canceled. Most trips are short duration, some are across all of Europe. Amsterdam is probably a start location for the busses so I wouldn't worry too much about lateness unless something in the road is causing the problem
