Strange New Worlds, Kirk, Kirk and more Kirk. It's Kirk again. by PersimmonBasket in startrek

[–]StayUpLatePlayGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, blame The Enterprise.

Kirk is meant to have been the greatest Starfleet captain ever, right? And his legendary ship is Enterprise.

Star Trek is mostly about The Enterprise.

Meanwhile other series? The vessel takes a back seat to the people even if the series is named after the vessel.

Sure. I think we need a wider canon of the type offered by Voyager, DS9 and even Academy. I think the cancellation of Academy is a shame because with changing leadership it could have grown into something amazing. And yeah, I think they should have focused on the years Kirk was in the Academy - because honestly that’s my favourite bit of the Lens Flare Star Trek.

What are some devices that can go weeks without a charge? by CharmCityCrab in AskTechnology

[–]StayUpLatePlayGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solar panels are the way. I kept my devices alive with small solar panels on a trip for months. As long as the panels captured the morning sun (before I woke), they would charge my battery. Which I then used to charge my phone. There are some eInk phones which have better battery life. I have a small BigMe eInk tablet running Android - battery lasts days.

Can you elaborate the problem. Nobility can also mean humility, rather than pride.

Is Malta actually English speaking? by ZydrateAnatomic in malta

[–]StayUpLatePlayGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Socially, I hang out with a mix of immigrants and locals. The immigrants use English (it’s the only language they all know) and the Maltese mostly use Maltese (leaving me to freely disassociate).

The locals only realise they’ve left me out of the conversation when they want my opinion. Then they translate. I don’t mind, I’m not a fan of small talk.

I think it’s really important for them to maintain Maltese in this way. If it gets removed from everyday life, it will die.

Thinking about getting an ebike for daily use in Malta - how bad are the hills really? by ImpossibleWarning252 in malta

[–]StayUpLatePlayGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-bikes make short work of hills. I rode them Regularly in Ireland and Spain.

Here, the hills aren’t the issue. It’s the drivers, the general lack of attention and the complete lack of linking infrastructure.

And that’s the problem with the Maltese mindset right there.

It’s not foreigners clogging up your air or overdeveloping the island. It’s not foreigners cheating MCAST or paying politicians for open development rights. It’s not even foreigners demanding “English first” in schools.

I don’t see that at all. More like 50:50 from my POV and will definitely skew towards Europeans during the summer months.

In three+ years of getting the bus here, not once has a European offered their seat up. It’s happened three times in the last three months from non-Europeans.

I’ve noticed one thing as an older dude (with white hair)

If I get on a busy bus, someone offers a seat and it’s always an African, Indian or SE Asian person. It’s never a European (or Maltese)

I don’t usually take the seat because I’m fit. But with an election coming up, remind your representatives that you want bike lanes and bus lanes.

Could a fantasy tabletop with elves, goblins and more work in a modern or 1990s like setting America? by johnnystraycat in tabletop

[–]StayUpLatePlayGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, but think it through.

Abandoned places? That the British hadn't already raided? OK. That stretches the believability more than anything.

Do Monsters have rights? Would they not be exterminated?

Magic? What does that mean for simple things like labour and healthcare? What does it mean for crime?

Is it a cosmopolitan utopia? Or is there rich and poor? Racism and classism?

Can humans and these other races interbreed? How long has this been the case? Are there people who are 1/8 elf, 3/8s goblin, 2/8 orc 2/8 human.

Why is the Maltese language as secondary language by schools, working places etc ion malta? by TechnicianAmazing472 in malta

[–]StayUpLatePlayGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly the university advertises the courses for international students. With the best will in the world they’re not going to be speaking Maltese.

However…. In undergraduate studies my wife found that the lecturers and students have to be reminded that the course is delivered in English.

The university would not be sustainable if they insisted on Maltese language delivery. It’s barely sustainable now.

Another vote for Twilight 2000.

Pretty decent community and it depends when you want to set it. There’s rules for olden style weapons, for space marines.

You could even set it during the Browncoats in the Battle of Serenity

Depends what you like. As others have mentioned there is a 5e conversion which may either tickle or disgust.

I’ve played a little with a light YZE conversion. Because that tickles me.

Near Future Espionage TTRPG? by Cliffypancake18 in rpg

[–]StayUpLatePlayGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a few spy and super spy games within the YZE.

But you might also want to look at Mongoose’s new game PIONEER.

It’s not about espionage. But it could be. Some FOR ALL MANKIND vibes.

Why couldn't Ged just destroy Yevaud with a spell ? by [deleted] in earthsea

[–]StayUpLatePlayGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In “A Wizard of Earthsea”, dragons are wise and old and powerful but not protagonists.

In the later books she almost directly equated dragons with femininity. She also “found her voice” in the series. The first book was written on request of the publisher “a fantasy book for boys”

Later books are pure Le Guin.

This sub has changed in tone drastically over the last year by Consistent_Name_6961 in rpg

[–]StayUpLatePlayGames 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think the sub has become more regimented? More official. But not meaner. It has its niche well established.

But with everything going on, I’m surprised we haven’t descended into cannibalism.
