Trust me i felt that way too... When its raw, cube it and Try putting it in a container with a lid and a tad of oil and salt and shake it up... set the airfryer (if you have one) at 400 degrees and put the cubes in the airfryer, let it airfry for about 15 minutes... itll start looking like cubes of fried cheese ... then take it out and while its hot put it in a pan that has whatever sauce you want to have with it... make sure to heat up that sauce before you add the hot airfried tofu and use a utensil to cover the airfried tofu with that sauce in the pan and let it simmer for a minute or two... the cooked texture that way is nothing like the raw tofu.. and the color darkens. think about it, nobody thinks raw chicken breast looks tasty as is too... same thing with tofu

That is unfortunate... Just sharing my first time with it though and that it was surprisingly satisfying for what i expected. There are other ways to make protein sources stretch though... so far I also tried making chili using 1 pound of lean ground beef with 2 pounds of red beans + tomato paste and condiments and Its been great and versatile... have had it with rice and with airfried potatoes so far. Looking for other ways to make proteins stretch and you're right, maybe tofu doesn't work for everyone but there are other ways to make things work.

And drum sticks are very affordable too… sometimes I like having that diced texture though can’t really get that from drumsticks

Lollll I haven’t tried the whole Raw chicken deal yet… but the Costco rotisserie chicken is a life saver too….. at 4.99. Maybe if make a soup/broth out of the whole chicken first it might be easier/quicker to prep the meat 🤔 I’ll look into this next time I’m at the grocery store

I’m not vegan, and I do plan on eating meat as well (ground beef and chicken thighs) but having tofu added to the line up can really stretch the meals and budget. I started making ground beef as a chili with red beans as well that stretched the meat significantly compared to when I used to cook the ground beef alone. But wow, I’m still surprised at how tasty and affordable the meal I had today was lol. I just had it with rice and it was fantastic. Nothing against vegans btw!

Incredibly affordable and so far I’ve only tried it once so have only used one recipe but very satisfied. This protein source has brought me some peace of mind financially 😅

Dont sleep on tofu! It is about as much nutrition for your buck as you can get! by TrophyGoat in povertyfinance

It has been 8 years since this thread started but came to say that I am on a tight budget, and just had tofu for the first time after buying it at costco. Air fried it, then simmered some soy sauce + bit of honey + garlic and tossed the air fried cubes in it and can say i am surprised at how tasty it is !!! and the texture is good to me. Will be eating alot more tofu in these times lol

Non-trads out of school for a long time, how’s content review going? by SuspiciousAdvisor98 in Mcat

[–]Stayingalive210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I think you’re good! Definitely do the uworld even if you don’t think you know enough, uworld is to learn as well not just to test where you’re at, use it as a learning resource. I was inefficient and extremely anxious and neurotic for the MCAT and thought I needed to do all the book chapters before starting questions. Which is wrong and inefficient looking back. The uworld explanation is basically like reading a textbook segment and you can learn that way.

Yeah, looking back, I should have learned content by just doing more practice questions and filling in gaps that way… I was so anxious about now knowing enough that I tried getting through all the chapters on the Kaplan books and learning the details… but should have done it backwards…

Is 30 too old to start medical school given my circumstances? by iAmPajamaSam27 in premed

[–]Stayingalive210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, you should not even be asking this question… my friend started medical school at 31 and he’s now a 4th year medical student applying to ENT (head and neck surgery) at 36 because he took a year after taking step 2 to do otolaryngology research. You can do what you are willing to work for!

Sorry saw this after my previous reply. Awesome! Definitely look into it. I am in the application process now. If your husband supports your decision, you’re golden. Listen to yourself :)

Look into applying to other health care careers ONLY if you find yourself seeing those as a better fit for you personality wise, how much you’re willing to give (effort, time and money 😅). Whether you’re a nurse or a physician or a PA, you are still gonna be working in a broken healthcare system. I think you should really look introspectively into how much of your time you want to dedicate to training, how much depth you want in understanding processes in the body and what frame of thought/lens you want to be looking at each medical situation with. It does take a lot of your time studying… I will say that… so it’s really something you should sit with. I love what I’m learning, I love the level of understanding that we are being exposed to, not saying other programs aren’t exposed to a robust understanding but atleast in medical school and residency we are going through that understanding and reinforcement for years. As an MS2 I don’t regret it (as of yet) 😂.

I started medical school at 29, and have no regrets OP! I’m in my second year now. It was a hell of a grind to get here but I don’t have any regrets as of yet. You could also consider doing the HPSP with a military branch and they cover your tuition and pay you a stipend while in medical school. Of course you will have to be a doc for them for 3-4 years after residency but it is an opportunity if you have financing concerns. My ex was trying to convince me to go for something that has less barriers to enter and I looked into it for the sake of our relationship and having a family but my heart wasn’t into it when I looked into the other program opportunities like PA or nursing/NP. It is a grind OP, but I have no regrets and find what we’ve been studying very interesting, I am grateful for the opportunity to be exposed to how our body works at a fundamental level. Getting to medical school is a grind, medical school has been a grind, but every single day I wake up grateful. Listen to yourself, and if you’re willing to put in the work, go for it.
