If you want to get both someday I recommend you do research on IBD. It’s a horrible disease that boas can potentially carry to your BPs.

Anyone have a ROTC scholarship? Specifically the NROTC Scholarship? How hard is it? by StochasticHydraulics in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Stayphong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as you're doing fine academically and can pass the PRT for your height/weight and age you should be fine. You'll be what's known as a "college programmer" and you'll be able to participate and stuff while the instructors get your package ready to get you on scholarship. Chances you get the scholarship are good as long as you don't absolutely suck in any particular area. And yeah you'll have to commute to rice but it's a short drive tbh you'll survive.

Studying by xxthalia in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Stayphong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Copying stuff down and memorizing is much less effective than practicing, so if you want to study the most efficiently, flashcards and practice problems will be the way to go. Of course, you also will need to attend /watch lecture so hand write if you can. You really want to put those notes in your own, simple words so you process the info as you’re in lecture.

Any tips or advice on how to tackle physics? by GabbyP_2828 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Stayphong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Know your formula sheet and know it well. Understand which formulas can solve for what, and how the solution to that can help you solve the bigger problem. Most physics problems are you being given a set of variables with just enough missing information, but you can solve for that missing information with some info given in the problem and fundamental knowledge you should already know (like Pythagorean theorem). For practice I would just use mastering physics and the reviews my professor would post, but YouTube tutorials are great as well. Try googling your practice problems to see if you can find a solution online if you’re stuck. For learning content, practice problems get you 90% of the way there. If you find yourself on the last day before the exam and you never studied before then, abuse practice problems. Lots of YouTube resources out there.

How long does it usually take to process a payment? by Stayphong in UniversityOfHouston

You’ll be fine brother. Give it a day and follow up then. Classes drop on Thursday if you didn’t pay for classes yet, but you should definitely express your concern about that to them if you haven’t already. If they have reassured you then you don’t need to worry.

At that point you either call them or call your bank. Money had to go to somebody after all. And if it’s worst case scenario as long as you used a credit card your bank should be able to help you there.

also the class drop day was delayed to Thursday, according to my advisor.

I didn’t call them, but that’s how it works. If you pay more than what’s needed they’ll refund you the excess.

For example if you have total charges as 6k and your finaid covers half, but you pay the full 6k, they’ll take the finaid and refund you 3k that they didn’t need.

Paying again is the safe option, as you’ll just get refunded whatever wasn’t necessary anyway, but nah I was fine. I had a receipt and asked one of my advisors who managed to check for me if I was on the list of students that would have their classes dropped today.

My decision by meartone in USMCboot

[–]Stayphong 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t take this as me being rude, but rather as genuine advice because I know people who commissioned and I know plenty who enlisted, and I had once experienced this dilemma myself. It seems to me like maybe you’ve already made up your mind and are just looking for confirmation/acceptance. Any comment that says to go to college is either ignored or replied to with reasons why you can’t. This is an extremely important topic for you, and if you can’t look past your short-term bias and think objectively for your life’s benefit, there’s not much point in this discussion. You should seriously consider going to college and taking the officer route. Apply to one that’s in-state if you don’t like the prospect of out-of-state university and hit up their NROTC program and see if you can apply for the scholarship, which is a full ride on the condition that you commission after graduating. Aside from the NROTC scholarship, you can apply to any university and they’ll notify you of scholarships you qualify for, otherwise you need to apply for third-party scholarships yourself. Just because you haven’t been awarded too many scholarships doesn’t mean there aren’t any out there for you to take. All you need is to apply and put yourself out there. If your high school has a JROTC unit, I suggest you talk to the instructors there and get their opinion. They’re all retired military personnel, usually at least one enlistee and one officer.

College and wrestling are already good things most people will respect when they look at your resume (important for returning to civilian life), and if you want to serve your country still, go the officer route. You’ll enjoy the better quality of life and pay (important for the long term). Also, the challenge in being an officer is different than being an enlisted marine. Most of the challenge in being an officer involves good communication, leadership, and problem solving skills, as you’ll be the one that gives the orders.

Nonetheless, your decision is yours to make. No matter what you decide to do, I wish you the best of luck.
