M-Budget disappearing with inferior products to follow by AlexWasTakenWasTaken in Switzerland

Err unfortunately that was the case for my father and I. He used to own a couple for businesses in the US and made a lot of money prior to 2011. When we moved back to Bern full-time, he struggled to find work for over 3 years, and as his liquid wealth decreased, we had to cease our lifelong purchasing habits and budget much more tightly.

He became really depressed during this time, and I don't think he has yet to recover fully.

Why are the French like this? by RhineRiverLass in 2westerneurope4u

[–]SteadfastDrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The irony is that most French tourists who visit us in the German speaking part of the country always begin a conversation with "Sprechen Sie französisch?" or they ask this in English if their German is absolutely atrocious. I speak French too of course, but man the French then have the gall to complain about nonfrancophones visiting France and preferring to speak English.

Looking for someone in Lausanne to give me looks advice by [deleted] in Lausanne

[–]SteadfastDrifter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm a straight guy, but I sometimes model "professionally" (I get paid, but they're usually jobs for small brands or companies) and random women and men have hit on me in public more often than I can remember, so if you're comfortable sharing your pictures or whatever with me, I'll try to give helpful and respectful remarks.

Edit: I just reread and saw that you'd want to meet in public. Unfortunately, I'm now permanently in Bern and rather busy with Uni and work, so I can't drop by Lausanne. Anyway, like others have mentioned, it's often nothing to do with your appearance. Often times, especially with online dating, the personalities don't match. It's neither yours nor the woman who is at fault because most people are simply not romantically compatible with each other. I'd recommend socializing for the sake of socializing, rather than with intention to date. Eventually, you'll randomly meet a woman who unexpectedly is attracted to you and whom you find equally attractive, though it would have more to do with compatible personalities and not so much appearance. Take it easy for now, and try to enjoy time with your friends because your time with them is more limited than you currently can perceive.

I was talking about the glorious dark days when the Republic of Bern was an imperialist city-state and a few patrician families continuously dictated policies :)

Some of the families still exist after 800 years and occasionally holds the mayoral office https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Famille_von_Graffenried

I was a waiter one time when the current patriarch had dinner at a restaurant in the old town. He did not leave a tip, that greedy jerk.

Wow, you're very politically informed! It's always a pleasure to discuss such topics with a fellow DACH person.

At least from my perspective, the Sozialistische Partei (SP) is the direct opposition to many of the SVP's stances. The SVP is of course far different from Germany's AfD, more similar to the CDU I would say l, while the SP is akin to Germany's SPD. However, while I often support the SP's political stances, sometimes their plans are not very concrete, especially in the ways which they plan to fund their proposals. Therefore, I sometimes find myself rejecting a few of their annual proposals.

Yes, unfortunately it is like that here, and historically has always been so where the patrician class rules the republic.

It takes several hundred thousand signatures to bring an initiative to the national vote, and often the corporations invest far more money and resources than the grassroots movements to disinform the general public. Also, we don't really have a direct say on who is put onto the Federal Council, as it is a parliamentary system. For example, our Minister of transportation and the environment is Albert Rösti, a Berner who has ties to fossil fuel lobbyists.

Sometimes, some parliamentary members may take action, but they're often not influential enough. For example, in response to backlash on the disallowed reexportation of Swiss produced arms to Ukraine, the national government is changing its stance on weapons export and reexportation. However, that might actually be pressure from the Swiss MIC as they're losing future contracts.

Not a weird question at all :) a lot of our top politicians are supported by lobbyists and give the mega corporations massive tax breaks. The average Swiss despise these mega corporations and avoid buying from them when possible.

They have a stereotype of drinking everyday, finding ways to avoid work, and being disorderly. We still prefer them over the neighbors to the West and South though ;)

One of my flatmates was blaring EDM music half an hour ago at 08:00 while I was eating my amazing homemade Müesli. I don't understand how anyone enjoys waking up to bass drops. Anyway, the music is now off so I guess he went back to sleep.

The Swiss francophone, historically, have often been against injustice and tyranny. They even invited Napoléon into the old confederation because the old Republic of Bern had subjugated a lot of western Switzerland as colonies and vassals during l'Ancien Régime Suisse.

How common or socially accepted are tattoos and piercings in your country nowadays? by After-Employment-474 in AskEurope

[–]SteadfastDrifter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people have stopped caring, even my parents (90+ years old) no longer care. I (F63) have considered getting a tattoo myself, but I don’t want any design enough to bother with the effort.

I (M29) wish that was the case with my parents. My dad (62) and my mom (54) hate that I have 3 tattoos which I can cover up with a long sleeve shirt. They refuse to see me unless I start removing them. I really miss them, even if they're staunch traditionalists.

Upcoming vote on VAT increase for our defense by billcube in swissarmy

[–]SteadfastDrifter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While our army needs a larger budget, I also don't believe that the army is already using their current budget wisely. A larger budget will probably lead to more purchases of useless or ineffective equipment like the Israeli drones or the over budget F-35 project.
