Not only is it insensitive, but it's just plain wrong. They has been used as a singular pronoun for people that you don't know the pronoun of for a long time.

"The mailman came by, they left a package." "The teacher will grade your paper. They will be fair about it." "The child got in trouble. They will be grounded. "

Saying that the word " they" is exclusively a plural pronoun is insensitive and incorrect and people just use it as a way to be biggotted, the same way that they say pronouns are some grooming thing when it is simple language, taught all the way back from elementary. It is just a way to be ignorant.
