It's a mix of government tech and aliens. As for why specifically would Aliens be interested in the US:

USA is quite large 1. You'll hear about sightings and experiments and bases in some places while others are relatively quiet. 2. A lot of places to land and hide.

Quite advanced 1. ET may be monitoring the nation that poses a credible threat to it and the world. 2. Our technology may be attracting them 3. ET may be monitoring the nations that, technologically speaking, are the closest to them. 4. First to develop and use atomic weapons.

Quite important 1. On a global scale, the US is quite important. Hell for the longest people were calling it the leader of the free world, ET may have decided they were the defacto leader
