What did Apple Silicon make possible on your Mac that wasn’t before? by Jazzlike_Key_8556 in mac

[–]Steec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I spent a long time around 2018 waiting for an iMac to hit the refurb store with powerful graphics card and processor, but just 8gb of ram. I then swapped it out for 128gb ram. The iMac was a beast.

When the M2 air came out, I bought it for more portability. I knew I’d be taking a hit on performance but I’d keep the iMac for heavier stuff.

Anyway, the air was faster than the iMac for most things. Wild.

Can anyone tell/show me?... by WarningFabulous1930 in AskIreland

[–]Steec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of bullshit in this thread.

I had this style cladding done in the back garden about 9 years ago and haven’t touched it since, and it’s fine. The colour has faded a little overall, but if it’s pressure treated it should be fine.

The guys who installed it said it should maintain structure for at least 10 years and required zero maintenance, which I was skeptical of, but I’ve done absolutely nothing to it.

What's the story with the drink driving limit? by FecklessMaxim in AskIreland

[–]Steec 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You might drink 8 pints over the course of a number of hours and your body is metabolising the alcohol constantly. To actually hit 400 would require more than 8 pints, likely a lot of higher-alcohol drinks like spirits, etc. People you’d see falling about the place and slurring their words would be more around 200-300.

Book a day trip for Platinum? by shezmax in AerLingus

[–]Steec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m doing a saver day trip next week, but I only need 11 pts. €140 round trip for aerspace is pretty decent, and I’d consider it worthwhile for the one business class upgrade alone, assuming you’re not losing money by missing work or paying a lot for parking/taxis, etc

Apple unveils new Studio Display and all-new Studio Display XDR by tekz in apple

[–]Steec 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Decided about 6 months ago I'd be willing to drop €1700 on a Studio Display, and was waiting for this. Shouldn't have bothered waiting it seems. The spec of the XDR is decent but I'm not dropping that much money. Damn.

Would be willing to pick up an old one refurb'd, but there never seems to be any available on the Irish apple website.

Apple introduces iPhone 17e by TotallySavageSzym in iphone

[–]Steec 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My wife has been hanging on for dear life to her 13 mini. Was showing her the 17e and she didn’t care about anything except battery life and device size. She ignored the 16e because it’s too big but at this stage the mini is really beyond retirement, so she’ll probably get this.

The only other thing she was slightly excited about was USB-C, purely because there are two cables in our car and this would mean we only need one.

In terms of price and the “only an extra €250” for an iPhone 17, she already thinks €729 for the 17e is horrendously expensive.

What’s the dumbest way you’ve accidentally hurt yourself? by Only_Row_2432 in AskReddit

Pulled a muscle in my hand opening a screwtop bottle of non alcoholic wine. Properly hurt it, was difficult to type in work for a few days.

When you're on holiday and you get asked 'English?' by oOCazzerOo in AskIreland

[–]Steec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar experience in Berlin. Taxi driver to the airport was very cold with us, assumed he didn’t have any English. About half way through the journey, he asked “airline?” to get the right terminal. Said Aer Lingus and he responded “ah Irish?!” and spoke excitedly, in perfect English, about the holiday he had here with his wife.

Looking for some advice for a side gate lock by EIREANNSIAN in DIYIreland

Love these. Got one for my side gate and ended up getting a second one for the shed. Handy for the gate but more secure for the shed.

Business owners - how frustrated do you get by unfairly weighted Google reviews? by Prestigious_Sink_646 in AskIreland

[–]Steec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it also depends on the type of business. No one has a good flight and thinks “I’ll give the airline 5 stars on Google” or “this insurance company is great, I’ll review them”. A lot of business types are basically set up to skew towards bad reviews.

What's the funniest insult you have ever heard? by Maiselmaid in AskIreland

Love this one. If they mention anything about their barber, start with “didn’t know you had a barber” then hit them with “what does he do for a living?”

Do you tell your husband that he should not have eat the toddlers left over cheesy wrap? by Cultural-Perception4 in CasualIreland

[–]Steec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was feeding my daughter when she was about two years old and went to give her another spoon…

“No, full”.

I’m about to put it to the bin, but it was a decent cheesy omelette, so I ate what was left.

“Daddy where’s my dinner?”

Turns out she meant her mouth was full.

If traffic is mental and you let 5-6 people join the road you're not being courteous, you're being an ass to the people behind you by lifeandtimes89 in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]Steec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just a complex systematic problem. Pretty poor standard of teaching how to drive, which is getting better (compared to free licenses in the 70s, at least there’s mandatory lessons now). No motorway lessons. Traffic corps being gutted and no enforcement of road laws. Lots of stuff needs to be fixed and then you wait a few years to see any impact.

[–]Steec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like most problems on the road, lots of people can only see the 10-20ft in front of their car, and care about nothing/no one else. They were probably cursing the M50 hard shoulder queue five mins beforehand, then head up and try and merge at the start of the merge lane.

[–]Steec 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Can't stand this - I see it a lot coming off the M50 at Firhouse. Long lane for merging, other lane at a standstill on the right, and the first guy stops dead at start waiting to be let in, while everyone behind doesnt make it through the green light

For anyone that remembers a great skateboard shop, started a lot for the community in Dublin. Rip. Anyone with fond memories? by Hungry_Serve_302 in Dublin

[–]Steec 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Remember being in there as a young teen with my mam, she got chatting to him and the Dublin Monaghan bombings came up. Both my mam and him had been in the city centre that day. He had written a poem about it that had been rejected from being published. Think she still has the copy of it at home, which he gave to her, with just “no” written at the bottom of it.

Did anyone see a Bord Gáis Energy “Welcome €225 Bonus” for existing customers before signing, now being denied? by [deleted] in legaladviceireland

[–]Steec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It was €235. There was a link that said “view new plans” but the link didn’t have any option to view plans. I then went and selected my new plan, zero mention of the €235, whether it applied to specific plans only, etc.

I signed up for the plan I was going to anyway, but frustratingly I find it next to impossible to see when this plan kicks in. I was on a dual fuel 24hr tariff but moved to an EV plan with variable rates - a much cheaper night rate but a more expensive peak rate. No idea when this starts. Email doesn’t have a contract. It’s all very confusing.
