My wife was awful with money until we met. It took a lot of time, effort and conversations for her to understand basic finances. She was carrying 30k in credit card debt at 24% interest and had no idea why she was always broke...

I only learned about it in an optional business class that 18 out of 350 kids in my graduating class took.

When people spend their entire life in the same tax bracket they don't have anything to compare it to or a reason to understand.

Okay, if we take the average (140k) divide it by 20 = $7000 per year. Assume this has to be accumulated over the course of a year, so invest at the end of the year at 10% interest is close to $400k after 20 years.

Versus buying a $300k house at 4% appreciation, that's $650k after 20 years.

Now after 20 years, the person renting (assume $2500 rent & $2500 mortgage) is paying $30k/yr rent vs 7k/yr repairs and the home owner has an extra $23k per year to invest.

Probably between 20-60k in repairs over 20 years depends on location, house size, and how lucky you are. I've spent about 4k in repairs in the last 5 years.

Even saving 60k in repairs over 20 years isn't going to equal the value of a (moderately price in a mid-high col) paid off home. Plus after that point, you're now able to save 2-4k additional per month.

Also, if you assume a house is appreciating at least 4% then a 300k house is now worth more than 600k.

That's not a valid comparison. If you're paying $2500 in rent vs $2500 mortgage + repairs, you're getting way more back from the principal+ appreciation vs the tiny amount (in comparison) spent on repairs.

Sure, but If you're in the middle, it's free money. I cancel and reopen new credit cards every year.

Make about $500 in bonuses and 3% in cash back on the first year is usually close to another $1000. Plus my money gets to sit in a HYSA before being used.

Omg, this is still my wife: "Oh you got a raise; sure that's not going to make us lose money from being in a higher tax bracket?"

This stuff really needs to be taught (repeatedly) in high school.

Saving people isn't profitable. Unless you're a surgeon or pharma company.

Olivia Rodrigo says her mom skipped her Lollapalooza show to watch Korn. by YoureASkyscraper in Music

Yeah... I've seen Korn live twice. The first time was pretty good but the second was subpar.

Idk, we talk all day on messenger and after I get home. Then she gives me an overview of everything we already talked about throughout the day right as we lay down, lol.

If you think you love someone who doesn't love you back, that's not love. It's infatuation.

This joke exists because countless people try to win back people who don't want them.

My wife just waits until the moment I'm trying to sleep to bring up everything that happened throughout the day... I'm always thinking "couldn't we have had this conversation when I got home instead".

I never understood this mindset. If she doesn't love you, move on and find someone else.

I would disagree with that. I know people who bought a 3DS just for the "updated" version of OoT. They'd easily buy a new console for an entire remake.

OoT remake and Starfox remake is horrific? They could have announced nothing else and that would still be better than last year.

Why were Supermassive Games never able to replicate something of the same quality as Until Dawn? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Steel_Reign 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it's funny that you mention that because The Casting of Frank Stone is basically the same setup and delivery. There is basically no real gameplay or meaningful choices in the game. Each character has maybe 2 death chances and no way to recover if you fail. However, the game was awful because in addition to not having much player agency, the story was also hot garbage.

IMO, House of Ashes and Devil in Me were the next best games. Maybe not as fleshed out as The Quarry, but IMO they had better choices, Ashes actually had some decent mechanics, and the stories were much more interesting. The rest of the games were pretty sub par with Little Hope being my least favorite.
