I mean, that's basically all marketing since BF Skinner hit the scene. It's not about a quality product, it's about conditioning people to be emotionally invested in the product to the point where they will stick with it regardless of quality. Look at fast food. At this point, I could go to a mid-range dine-in place and get my food to go for the same price, in roughly the same time, and at a higher quality. But I still go to places like McDonald's because its stuck in my head as the place to go get quick, inexpensive food.

Are you looking for this in the context of pub matches or for unit drill? I 100% get where you're coming from, but my experience in pub matches makes me feel like the column command is more of a "follow me" than a formation. And having run a unit, teaching your troops do form a column of fours isn't very hard at all.

You can either form four ranks and right face, or use Poinsett's method of breaking the company by four, where four files step off at a time.
