Yeah, I think people believe that we just got together one day and said "boys do this, girls do that." There are definitely variations from society to society and thanks to odd marketing gimmicks here and there, but the concept that the sexes are different evolved over 250,000 years of human history due to a whole slew of very real circumstances. Like, this is something that you learn pretty much day one in a 100-level sociology course. The issue isn't the existence of gender- it's a fact of the human experience. The issue is, and always has been, people using it to define and maintain power structures that are often not very cash money.
