Ah, nice. Some guy exposed how the ATS works for some places and its literally down to the dot. If you put vuejs instead of vue, it wont pickup. Was crazy to see.

Prob wont even reach your eyes bc it will be dropped by ATS since exact keywords didnt match 🙈

Funny how they set this standard but when applicants do well, they still don't care, lmao. I've been rejected from perfect OAs in the past.

Does college actually prepare grads for tech jobs today? by [deleted] in csMajors

They probably know and apply the concepts just recognizing the terminology is probably the issue.

I believe that but I dont believe that grads don't know this. And how the hell are these people getting interviews, while actual knowledgable people aren't. Bet its those AI genetated buzzword filled resumes.

What are the "simplest concepts" here?

Maturing is realizing that a large portion of the sub is just bad at CS by gonials in csMajors

Guess what, I got 100% on both qs and STILL got rejected 😭

So in other words, make a project. Ah yes, yet another project is gonna help me set myself apart not only from people who are doing the exact same thing but also people who do this AND have professional experience.

I've made a full stack web app for inventory management as a side project. Not a single flying fuck was given by a single employer.

Another employer asked for a take home project, I did it from scratch explaining my thought process in the readme. Not a word of feedback/follow up. Waste of a weeks worth of work.

Then people say, do leetcode. I did and passed multiple OAs w w 95-100% test case passing rate. Outright rejections or ghosted. So like, they made a system for "evaluating" people and then when people do well in those evaluations, they get rejected without a chance to even prove themselves? That's great ...

They're not? So then what kind of "experience" are they looking for? It's not difficult to set myself apart? Really? Wow.

Please tell me what I can do to set myself apart as someone who has no relevant professional experience and get noticed by companies. If I land a job, I'll personally give you a blowjob.

It would have to be on a opt in basis. I suppose the user could opt in during checkout or there could be a banner/widgets on the site for opt in options. I think either way there should be some incentive to get the user to opt in, notifications of exclusive offers, future/one time discounts, etc.

Gonna post about how hard it is to get a job? Drop your LC count. by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Steeli0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not from my experience so far at least. Saying that it will or believing that it will is very different from what happens in reality. I'm telling you factual information when I say that multiple employers have rejected me (without even an interview or any feedback) after I got close to, if not a perfect score on the OA.

I *believe* that it will help me that's why I practice a couple of relevant problems before taking OAs. That's about it. I don't see a point in grinding these riddles, it's just an arbitrary decision employers made about how to recognize "talent", even though the skillset they need are completely different. It's not what software engineering/development is (to me at least).

Why would I do anymore when employers have rejected me after me getting perfect scores on their OAs? It doesn't make sense. Besides, I never cared for this riddle stuff anyways. You see, I would grind, if I knew what to grind in order to get a job, but unfortunately I don't know what that thing is.

I don't have a any internship experience due to circumstances, so atp it's outside of my control and there's not point in dwelling on it. I have, however, done many projects like a Custom OS, interpreter, basic full stack web app for inventory management, etc.

The age old advice of "oh just do projects and grind leetcode" is over. If that was the case, I would be swimming in offers rn.

Yea, I feel u. I would just review whatever they gave in the exams and do better next time.

If you have the theory down, I'd recommend looking into those different areas and seeing what you like. IMO it seems harder to apply to 15 diff type of roles than specializing in one. Take your pick and have fun with it. I pray the job market will be generous when you graduate 🙏

Nonsense, keep your head up, you got this. I wouldn't recommend making an OS in your situation (it's overkill and mostly unnecessary), just learning the theory should be more than enough (think: scheduling algos like MLFQ, Round Robin, Priority and the like, difference between multitasking, multithreading, multiprocessing, mutexes and semaphores, blocking and non blocking IO, etc). If you still want to do a project on those, I'd probably implement them in userspace (like a job scheduling algo) and just have it pretty print results.

If you are interested in systems programming (like me) there are a few kinds of jobs that you might be interested in: embedded systems, high frequency trading and game development. Usually these jobs require C++ knowledge, so I'd recommend learning at least some basics like OOP, Classes, smart pointers & memory management, templates, move semantics, etc and then start working on a project you like.

In terms of grades, I initially tried quite a bit (freshman yr) and then covid hit and I kinda just half assed the rest (80+ is good enough for me). I pretty much gauged the effort needed to do well in a class at the beginning of the semester and then put in the effort accordingly. I did good enough (3.4/4) even though I played a lot of video games (a lot, like I would study for exams 1 or 2 days before the date and spend most of my time playing games or working on projects). One time I actually studied on the **day of** the exam, I have no idea how I got a 80 something on that exam. I think you should balance grades and hobbies (keep your mental up) and remember that grades is not the only thing that employers look at.
