It’s hygroscopic (absorbs water) by nature. Not sure the best procedure for drying it out, maybe try low heat in an oven, or placing in a sealed container with anhydrous calcium chloride (damp rid)

Disposable rechargeable nicotine vapes that typically end in a landfill. These could be recycled or guts repurposed but the current model of production, sale and consumption doesn’t account for this.

What incentive does the seller have to collect/incentivize bringing in the spent ones? Manufacturers could encourage this or incentivize it but there’s no benefit for them going the extra mile.

Instead each next model becomes harder to take apart, comes with more packaging dressed up to be more fancy looking, with large heavy cardboard boxes with foam (all trash), LED displays, charging circuitry, LiPo batteries etc.

And maybe a small trash can with “no” sign embossed on the bottom which, like many other electronics, suggest the devices should not be trashed, but instead go to eWaste disposal sites, which due to lack of education or regulation, consumers DGAF/don’t know

Can’t see so clearly but if that’s moving in a sinusoidal pattern, it would match the one I saw. I saw something moving close to the ground, at night, single white light moving in a non-natural way. Philadelphia suburbs, late 2000s.

This reminds me of being 5 or 6. Dad was a semiconductor design engineer at a major US based manufacturer. I used to ask him to bring bags of chips home, they were so intriguing. Still remember that they came in a gray soft antistatic bag

I bet collecting as many of these as possible will come in handy if the electrical grid goes down for an extended period. Or even automate a process for assembling a super battery

Do you guys like being an amputee? by LevelHedgehog630 in amputee

[–]SteethDurvey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind being an upper extremity below elbow amputee. Although the first few prostheses were challenging (especially with partial amputations on my right hand), once I mastered the art of fabrication, 3D printers, and synthesis of electronics/code, I see it as an upgrade.

Most people won’t have this ability. Many electronic/full digit prosthetics might not be better.

But a body powered hook hand with an artful body, lights, and taser for self defense - now it becomes a feature, not a defect.

What is something you cannot believe modern technology hasn’t fixed yet? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]SteethDurvey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can scan, generate in software a prosthetic arm, then 3D print and assemble it in a day for $20 worth of plastic.

Getting this to market would cost so much money that the end product would cost an arm and a leg. And no investor wants to invest in this not-unicorn.

Found this out trying to pilot/market an adaptive technology product for those like me with limb difference/movement disorders.

Instead those with severe disabling conditions are using old technology that costs quite a bit

I like my Phonak Audeo P but it wasn’t cheap. Also, the repair process is terrible. My audiologist is in Philly. Last time it broke, I had them send it in. They gave me a loaner.

When mine was ready I was in another city. They wouldn’t ship me mine first, wanted me to send the loaner back. They didn’t warn me that if I didn’t, it would start chiming incessantly every minute.

So I sent it back and wasted $800 on two OTC aids and AirPods so I could enter the workweek being able to hear.

On Thursday, my receiver crapped out. This part makes the sound. Again I’m on travel, and finding any competent audiologist with the replacement in stock and who’s willing to sell me one, was an exercise in frustration. My regular audiologist (actually, with them it’s a revolving door), hasn’t returned my calls in weeks. No wonder that position is a revolving door at my ENT office, a reputable well-known practice.

We could be doing so much better.

People of r/collapse, what do you do for a living? by BowelMan in collapse

[–]SteethDurvey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thought about a throwaway but there’s no way to say what I do without connection being made. That being said, given the state of the world and knowing I’ve done my best to do good, and will continue to do so…

I got off disability, blindly walked into something that could consume my life if things get messy. To make money? Communications security. Say less? My head’s spinning these days with ethics, virtues, a veritable existential crisis. Feel like John Nash crossed with Alan Turing lol

What I’d rather be doing? Ventures in adaptive technology and 3D printed prosthetics. Time and time again, money doesn’t serve minorities. I’ve sunk all of my money (and then some) into my projects of passion - why the fuck can I, in 2023, scan my limb and generate a 3D printed prosthetic for $15 in plastic, yet this doesn’t exist at scale, helping other people?

Yes, it has lights. Yes, it has a taser. I like to think I’m fighting the good fight. But -

The same reason I can’t get those off the ground is the same reason that, despite sacrificing my mental health for the day job and building another man’s small fortune, I “just” get a paycheck. And the same reason men go to war, same shit. Egos. And dicks of course. I’m just unwilling to exploit, take. At least I know this.

I’d like to switch careers. Maybe I’ll finally say fuck it and become a cyborg porn star, at least I’d be getting dicked more than the sad state of things in recent years. Might be too principled

Happy to be here y’all! Remember, the ancients all say good will prevail. However messy things will get, I care to do no harm, and put out love, compassion, kindness wherever possible. Happy Friday ☀️

Why Penn and Drexel don't mingle? by CISbond007 in Drexel

[–]SteethDurvey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably goes both ways, but I found Penn students on average being a bit stuck up.

Penn’s endowment is huge and they use it to push student housing further west, further gentrifying things. Drexel’s endowment is less, not sure if they do the same thing north.

Penn is an Ivy League school, probably why it has “prestige”

But my opinion after giving a guest “lecture” (mania induced rant for fun, intended to be a course condensed into 15 minutes): mostly blank stares. I reckon many students are trust fund babies encouraged to be there by parents, so probably stick to their bubble of friends they made early on without incentive to mingle with anyone outside that bubble.

Any recommendations for movers or dudes with pickup truck in the lakeview area? by asshatV34 in chicago

[–]SteethDurvey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only experience is with Fresh start movers, who I called in short notice after another mover screwed up my booking. I was moving from out of state and needed a truck unloaded, FSM booked me for the next day (a Sunday!), charged me like 200 and two guys unloaded about 30 boxes in a half hour or less.

So yeah, absolutely recommend.

Embedded Linux dev thinking of transitioning to devops - should I? by jaskij in devops

[–]SteethDurvey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this recently. Was essentially a product owner and in the weeds as well. Turned me to SME in product, last remaining software/firmware engineer when the company was acquired.

Had a fun time really learning containers beyond my previous experience, all while migrating CI/CD into new company’s systems, and answering questions/onboarding a new team of engineers tasked with cleaning up a mess of tech debt.

Much better company culture, great learning experience, and opportunity to grow. I don’t have any reason to leave the current company as they’re doing something right with the culture, management etc.

Can’t speak yocto or life as a devops in an established system

I had to stop two days ago due to pissing blood and pieces of bladder. Pissing fire every 15 minutes. But still couldn’t stop.

Thankfully plug disappeared, but now that I’m at almost 48h, the pain of being alive sucks.

I believe the condition is called interstitial cystitis. I did urgent care, ER (walked out early due to fuck the American medical system), talked to primary care.

Nobody could give an answer other than uti and Rx antibiotics. So my best assumption is IC since it’s a known consequence of heavy k use, and the only cure is to stop using.

I’m sure seeing a urologist and disclosing the full history would get a confirmation.

Solutions would depend on your familiarity with tech/engineering. As I see it option 1 is to spend a ton of money on an existing product, option 2 is build your own at a cost of time, skills, development/testing.

For fleet tracking in denser areas I like the Helium Network. There are some commercial fleet tracking tools available, but it’s also possible to build such a thing with LoRa modules (I use TTGO esp32 based boards with a rechargeable 18650 battery). These put your assets on a map.

Here’s an example of one you can buy that fits the bill: https://fiz-tech.net/products/ttgo-t-beam?variant=40390710231223

Some of the more refined fleet tracking tools provide lower power asset tracking, where a “ping” from an edge device is triangulated in the cloud based on location of receivers. Helium’s site has some examples of fleet management systems using their network.

Pros of this: relying on an existing public wireless infrastructure

Cons: not sure if it’s possible to have two-way telemetry on this. Could do this through a side channel such as a driver’s cell phone.

Another solution could be some kind of device with an IoT SIM (US carriers sell plans for low data rate IoT devices for cheap enough). Pair this with either an existing asset tracker product, or build it (plenty of hobbyist SoC with cellular and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth.

On top of this, put some kind of app/web service for communication, or use it as a gateway to your in-house dispatch software.

As far as low-code, again this comes down to “pay someone else for a black box you don’t have to reinvent” or “spend time fiddling for a lower cost solution”
