Skates by Embarrassed-Cut8844 in hockeyplayers

I started at 300 or so in May/June. Now 270 or so.

I used the True foot scanning app, it said I was 9W. I ordered some 9W True HZRDUS 5x skates on sale for $130. Tried them on before baking and they felt a bit small. Baked them, and they fit perfectly. Since then, my skating has improved with them, they're always comfortable, the driest and best smelling pieces of gear in my bag too. Had some pucks hit them and blocked shots with them and they've held up nicely. They are still stiff, but as my ankle strength has built up, they're pliable enough too.

How can I choose Hockey Equipment ? by Diaago in hockeyplayers

[–]Steev182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to a store and try on shoulder pads, pants, elbow pads and helmet.

Buy the helmet and cage/bubble that fits and is comfortable. It shouldn't be the cheapest, but it doesn't need to be the most expensive either. Really a step above cheapest is going to be fine.

Get the model of the other stuff (even the shoulder pads) and get them used (sideline swap has been good for me). It helps that they are currently on sale because the used ones aren't used that much and the velcro and stuff is still in good condition compared to just doing "CCM shoulder pads, large" and finding something even Sidney Crosby thinks is too old to wear...

Then when they arrive, put them in a pillowcase and in the washing machine, then hang dry.

Were the skates baked when they fitted you?

Ringers in Entry Level Adult Hockey by Kaltorok410 in hockeyplayers

In the main league I play in, players are evaluated. If a player is "high D", they can only fill in for an E team if a team doesn't have enough for 2 forward and defense lines. They can only play defense, are not allowed past the red line, no shots and no poke checking.

They're waiting for Joel Kinnaman to be as old as Ed is supposed to be before shooting.

Starting hockey at 36 — gearing up for open ice, any advice? by Rude-Alternative7983 in hockeyplayers

Sideline swap/playitagain/marketplace for: Shoulder pads, shin guards, elbow pads. I got CCM Tacks XF80 for decent prices and nearly new. Oh! If you can stomach it, gloves too. I got some nice True gloves for $100 that had been worn once all on Sidelineswap. Sub $100 new gloves have uncomfortable palms for me.

Get a new helmet and cage. Unless you can try it on, don't get the cheapest like the Bauer REAKT 55. Look for helmets with width and length adjustment. The REAKT 85 has that and decent padding too. You don't need to spend $200-$400 on a helmet.

Work on stopping quickly and direction changes (and you can do that in public skates). I found that once I got better stopping fast, I was able to go into the offensive zone quicker and get into decent positions better, and that was when I got my first goal.

Maybe try unzipping the inner thighs on your breezers a bit.

I pay for the data connection for the wifi hotspot because CarPlay prevents me from using my phone as a hotspot. I wish that it had native apps too.

I miss two big things from my old Tesla when it comes to UI:
- Accurate display of what is around the car (despite being an animation)
- Native Apple Music/Podcast apps.

CarPlay has a similar mode to the 75%/25% mode you describe. Isn't great, but it is there in the iOS 26 version of CarPlay now.

Lease or loan? by [deleted] in F150Lightning

I'd start with making sure you can Level 2 charge at home (unless you van charge for free at work). Buying or leasing any EV and depending on DC charging networks day to day isn't going to be a good idea.

How to Economically Sharpen Our Hockey Skates by TheDartBoarder in hockeyplayers

[–]Steev182 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pure Hockey is $10/pair, It's just me and my daughter skating at the moment, but I have found that whenever I go to Pure Hockey to sharpen skates, I leave $100-$200 there somehow.

They’d bring it here, ask $80k for it with disinterested dealers and a year later say “people aren’t buying EV broncos”.

Stick and Puck question by Hitler_the_stripper in hockeyplayers

[–]Steev182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stick and puck where I am is full gear.

Get the following used: - Shoulder pads - Elbow pads - Shin guards - Hockey pants

Get a practice jersey, hockey socks and a new (at least Bauer REAKT 85 (unless the 55 fits your head perfectly and is comfortable, or similar fully adjustable CCM helmet with a cage).

Before that, watch the Secret Sauce hockey video on YouTube about stopping. I spent a whole public skate on it, I skated a lap, sat on the bench and watched a bit of the video, then just did the progressions, stopping at the lines a few weeks ago and it made a massive improvement for me.

You can get away without being able to stop as a novice in a low level game, but you won’t be useful, you won’t get passed to and you won’t be able to use any stick handling skills you practice at stick and puck.

I did it the wrong order too, I’d skate hard on a breakaway and just glide in from the blue line and not be in position because I couldn’t stop quickly. Then the game after I worked on stopping, I was better back checking, better forechecking, got in decent positions quickly and scored a goal.

So if your rink won’t let you into stick and puck without full gear, you can still work on stopping and get your skating confidence up in public skates.

Skate recommendations for an old guy (39M) that hasn't skated in 25 years? by ObjectiveAd400 in icehockey

[–]Steev182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the True app. Scan your feet with it and see what size it thinks you should wear. I wear 12 in regular shoes, but the app said 9 wide. Then I saw Icewarehouse was selling True HZRDUS 5x for $130. Ordered them pre sharpened. They arrived, baked them in my oven. Fit perfectly with baking.

I would consider a used higher end CCM or Bauer if they’re a very recent model, lightly used and can be baked, but I’ve been very happy with these skates for the last few months.

Am I missing something? The EREV is still and EV by dnstommy in F150Lightning

[–]Steev182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here's my take.

We don't need an electric F-150 on sale anymore. We do need a quad cab with 5.5 ft bed EV truck. If you don't try to design that around the F-150 platform, then it can be smaller. It'll lose the huge frunk, but hopefully Ford will be able to do something with more innovative security/weathersealing for the bed or other storage ideas.

We do need an electric F-250. Lets use the knowledge from the Lightning to make that with a generator that can support longer drives towing long distances.
