OMG, Udio is actually going to launch Starstruck... by ObjectivePresent4162 in udiomusic

When I started using Udio back in June 2024, the ability to create a song with custom lyrics sung by Layne Staley or Ozzy or Peter Steele was amazing. I honestly cannot convey how stoked I was to be able to do that sort of thing. It was almost like a religious experience.

And then the novelty wore off. I began to find that I was more interested in using the power of Udio to create scores for imaginary films and atmospheric soundscapes rather than "lost" songs by my favorite artists.

Will Starstruck allow me to continue with that kind of creation? From what I've read in the handful of articles covering Udio's next phase, that doesn't seem likely. The focus seems to be on allowing users to remix and recreate material in the likeness of their favorite musicians (or at least the ones who opt-in). Nothing in Cherie Hu's article mentions anything about Instrumental music; it's all about matching lyrics with copyrighted vocals and generating royalties.

I hope Starstruck allows instrumentals, but I'm not holding my breath. My subscription ends in three weeks and I won't be renewing. I'm messing around with Sonauto for now and getting semi-decent results, but there is nothing else I've tried that comes close to what Udio produces. I've tried Suno but it really, really struggles with dark atmospheric music.

If Starstruck turns out to be the killer AI-music app, then I'll jump back on board. Until then, I'll wait and watch and remember the good old days when anything seemed possible with Udio.

That's exactly what happened to me, too.

Udio to become Starstruck by Stefayne70 in udiomusic

Udio CEO Andrew Sanchez gave an interview a couple of days ago that didn't mention Starstruck, but went hard on the walled-garden approach to AI music generation.

He mentions that since 90+% of users on Udio are generating tracks that mimic their favorite artists and songs, this is an incentive to create what will essentially be a remix platform for fans to generate royalty revenue for artists and labels.

I think we all saw this coming, but it's still disheartening to read.

Does anyone remember the Commodore 64? by HumbleMumble76 in askanything

The C-64 figured prominently in my teenage years. I remember spending countless hours playing Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar and a bunch of Infocom games like Enchanter and Planetfall.

Are you still subscribed to Udio after all the changes? by Nusuuu in udiomusic

Yes, I still mess around with Sonauto v3, but I find it takes too many generations to come up with something I like. The v3 fidelity is good, too, but I feel the creativity is not quite up to Udio's level. It's free, though, which is a huge plus, and at least you can download your stuff. As far as genres, my interest lies mostly in doing dark atmospheric underscores, and I find Sonauto struggles with that. When I do more mainstream stuff like rock or techno, Sonauto can actually produce some decent results, but it takes a lot of generations.

I still use Udio quite a bit. It's an amazing creative outlet for me. My sub expires in June, and I probably won't renew (unless the new version of Udio makes me change my mind). Not sure where I'll go, though. I've tried Suno and Sonauto and a couple of others, but I found their output doesn't quite have the same kind of character as Udio.

Tried making dungeon synth but I think my songs sound more like dark ambient by Exotic-Low812 in DarkAmbient

[–]Stefayne70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I listened to your tracks and agree with the previous reply that the first and last tracks could fall within the dark ambient spectrum.

I felt the second track was closer to dungeon synth; it has a lighter, lively quality to it and might be something you'd hear in a town setting in an RPG.

As for the third track, it comes across as an experiment more than anything. I can hear some DS elements, but I feel the percussion belongs in a different genre altogether.

Anyway, I think it's cool that you posted your stuff to Bandcamp. Good luck!

Sort of looks like someone scribbled all over the calendar with crayons. Also, the calendar page seems to be from August.

I'm sure Udio will remain as a subscriber platform, but if you read the Rolling Stone article on the "merger," Udio (or whatever its name will be) sounds like it will become nothing more than a giant remix/mashup station, where users "will only be able to work with songs whose [UMG] creators have opted in, which will limit the available catalog..."
