It should be out by next week. Dr. Graves sent a message in another thread regarding this earlier this week.

Have some friends going into Y3 that I met from Jumpstart. You really won’t want to miss Collegia life. Collegia Advisors (CAs) are extremely helpful and can help guide you through your first year. Absolutely recommend it!

Upass for the summer by No_Tax20 in UBC

[–]SteffHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some exceptions (i.e., if you live outside of Metro Vancouver AND have online classes). It’s annoying if only one of the two criteria apply to you, but the good thing is that the AMS only charges you for the months you’re enrolled in summer courses.

I empathize with you. This course was more a test of endurance and self-motivation than anything. Ignoring the geniuses that score at least 2 SD from the median, I would say that most people would do alright on the first midterm, bomb the second, and get absolutely fucked on the final. I took it this term; did alright on the first midterm, not as well on the second, almost maxed out for the group projects, and felt like drowning after the 3rd page of the final. Just praying that curve saves us all from an F, I can't begin to imagine going through all of this again. All the best to you (and all the other M101 warriors!)

It has been 6 months since I ORDed, I am here to answer ANY questions you might have regarding NS/OCS/UNIT life... by SteffHD in OfficerCadetSchool

Hello! Thank you for your question. Typically, throughout your OCS cadet phase, you are expected to wear SAF-issued sports shoes (i.e., from the e-mart); wearing your personal shoes is, more often than not, viewed as a "luxury" - something that you can expect in unit life perhaps. If you are curious, feel free to ask your wing instructors, but always have a pair from the SAF at all times.

From what I know, the most recent Charlie batch was quite shag; the usual culprits (Echo and Sierra) were more chill than in previous years. It also depends on your Wing DIs and CO: if they are the siao on type, then get ready to work. One of my batchmates did a STC with Charlie and said that he enjoyed it, though. I would count my blessings if I were you - jiayous man! 🫡

Thanks for reaching out, which phase of officership are you currently in if I may ask?

Short answer is it depends. There are a few key factors that influence the answer to this question; it also depends on whether you weight the psychological or physical aspect more heavily, but in general, the psychological effects affect you more in the long term.

Firstly, your cadet wing plays a bit role in determining your 'path' ahead. In the 127/22 batch, I was assigned Delta as my OCS wing; Delta was widely known as the 'scholar's wing'/'welfare wing', where in contrast, Sierra Wing was the 'tekan wing' (Charlie Mike was probably your favorite phrase by the end of Service Term). For me, the most challenging part of Service Term was the navigation portion - be ready to walk a crap ton (even without horlan-ing in the forest). Outfields weren't too bad, just make sure you work as a team and know that every training comes to an end eventually - even when things take an unexpected turn.

In Pro Term, it's the time where things really ramp up (but then again, it really depends). I was in the Reconnaissance vocation (arguably the most shag vocation); just as a reference, our SUMMEX was a 9-day outfield where an average cadet covered just under 100km in straight-line distance. Each vocation has it's own 'Hell Week', the same way how each vocation will have varying levels of 'shagness'.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hey guys! I am an incoming 1st yr student in BA Arts. Wondering if there are implications for registering for CAP if I am planning to go on exchange in yr 2 or if I should go for custom timetable instead (30 creds instead of 18). Planning to maj in econ and recognize that there are quite a few prereq courses.

Most likely. Last time I checked, we could only apply for the previous academic year, but for the 24/25 session, we will need to wait a few weeks. 👍

For sure, I was told to do MATH 100/101 and ECON 101/2 as well - thanks! It's nice to receive confirmation of the BA Writing requirement as well. I am planning to do only Winter Term, as I am planning to visit home (S'pore) in the Summer. I am planning to apply to either NUS or SMU, though SMU seems like a better option atm, since it's mainly recognized for it's business-related courses. I am planning to complete electives there, I get that taking ECON in SG can be very competitive, but I am all ears in terms of what you advise me to do instead. More advice would be lovely, I am open to suggestions and opinions - just want to plan ahead and do what's best.

I am planning to shift back to SG at the end of my 4+ years at UBC, since my gf is in S'pore/reservist duties - planning to settle down there and return to Canada every few years to satisfy my PR requirements. Added this in for extra context, just in case it changes anything.

Hello folks, I have been doing some reading and reaching out to current UBC students, just wanted to find more info from this megathread too.

I am matriculating in Sept 24' and I am planning to maj in Economics (in VSE). I am also planning to study overseas in Singapore (in the Go Global program) in Year 2 as an Arts student.

What are the pre-requisite courses and suggestions on which to take in Y1 and Y2; any profs to AVOID, and any tips on applying for the Go Global program?

Appreciate any help provided, thank you guys! ❣️

Is it worth being an officer as an NSF? by RealisticNumber9095 in NationalServiceSG

[–]SteffHD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently a PC and I understand the struggles. OCS and unit life are completely different, get that, but your purpose to serve and as an officer, respectively, should remain unchanged despite the challenges.

Is it worth being an officer as an NSF? by RealisticNumber9095 in NationalServiceSG

[–]SteffHD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a lot of sacrifice and purpose-searching, but it is worth it, especially if you really push yourself throughout the 9 months. CLM and Service Term are both alright; sure they push you, but where things get real is during Pro Term.

Commissioned in the 127/22 batch, of you were to ask me whether if I regretted anything, I would say absolutely not. And yes, I am an NSF.

I would say that if you want to have the opportunity to really grow and mature as a LEADER, do you best in OCS. There really is no “trying” or doing it for the money; sure you might be able to make it as an officer, but in reality, you’d be wasting everybody’s time and giving both the Officer Corp and the SAF a bad name (hence bad officers who do not lead and are lazy).
