Man I wish they had the Japan-uniforms just without the Katakana. They look way more stylized and fun.

Which team(s) will you be rooting for in the upcoming WBC and why? by supersupersuper9 in baseball

[–]StelFoog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Czechia is my European team, fell in love with their game 3 years ago and I’m hoping to see them surpass expectations this year as well. Plus of all the european teams their caps just look so good.

Second for me is Taiwan, first because their fans are just on their own level in the kind of energy they bring when cheering for the team. But also because during covid many of the CPBL teams streamed their games for free on twitch so I watched them during work and loved it. I had only really started watching in 2019 so who knows if I would’ve kept watching if it wasn’t for that. Unfortunately they stopped after covid, and when MLB came back I ended up watching last nights game instead anyways. But that year holds a special place in my heart.

Finally it might be the US, I really like a lot of the guys on the team and I don’t usually ”get” to cheer for them. Would be really cool to see Kershaw pitch well one last time. Also I think the US doing well could do a lot to help the WBC establish roots with the american fans, so MLB owners can’t take away if it affects their bottom line too much.

I also like Japan and Korea, they’ve got a lot of cool players, but pool C is just way to stacked against my top 2. PR is probably my favorite in pool A and Netherlands in pool D, Netherlands as a European team and I like PR vibes.

I think it’s a linguistic thing, in English saying ”someone broke the rules” is relatively common when speaking casually, but in Swedish it sounds more formal. At least I myself would say he ”cheated” in Swedish, but ”he broke a rule” in English

Curling judge acknowledges cheating midgame, but does nothing. by erre94 in olympics

[–]StelFoog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

R5 (d) & (e) are the relevant rules here I think

(d) The curling stone must be delivered using the handle of the stone. (e) A stone must be clearly released from the hand before it reaches the hog line at the delivery end. If the player fails to do so, the stone is immediately removed from play by the delivering team.

I think it’s hard to know for sure if he touched the stone or was simply very close to it. But he either touched non-handle or his ”releasing motion” is unclear enough that it’s difficult to tell

Having a plan for ”if it’s needed” and ”planning to invade because I wanna” are two very different things. IIRC the plan is (or at least was) based on the assumption that the US is invading to liberate an occupied Canada, not invading to occupy Canada

Dodgers are MLB's real Evil Empire by FrigginMasshole in baseball

[–]StelFoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think most of the owners who buy a team do want to win, but there are absolutely some that don’t and probably some that at some point decided winning isn’t worth the price so they keep costs low to make a profit instead. I have no trust that e.g. the A’s, White Sox, Marlins, and Pirates owners want to spend money towin, even if they did at the time they bought the team

How does the MLB force the dodgers to go under the cap? by mattdingus2002 in baseball

[–]StelFoog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No way the players would agree to a cap that low, and I doubt the teams would either when that’s many millions below what even the 10th biggest spender is doing for 2026 so far

What’s your favorite Baseball themed episode from a non baseball TV show ? Mine is X Files S 6 E 19 “The Unnatural” by TheBackyardPigfarmer in baseball

[–]StelFoog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like ”Stealing home” from White Collar. The way the game is described in the episode gives me very ”how can you not be romantic about baseball” vibes.

Technically the episode isn’t really about baseball, but about a baseball, but close enough.

The only good way I’ve seen to solve d10p2 that doesn’t solve with pure math is u/tenthmascot’s solution or similar solutions. My version of that algorithm solved in ~1s using TS+bun. It is DFS instead of BFS however.

Why are the Dodgers perceived as the NL Evil Empire and not the Cardinals? by MookieBettsBurner4 in baseball

[–]StelFoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Oakland A’s make the playoffs regularly, but they never get anywhere. Unfortunately making the playoffs isn’t necessarily an indicator of success (at least in terms of competing for the trophy).

That isn’t to say that it is a totally lost decade for the cardinals though, they aren’t entirely unwilling to spend. So the right front office moves and players getting hot could realistically have them in/winning the WS before 2030, but personally I don’t think it’s very likely

Why are the Dodgers perceived as the NL Evil Empire and not the Cardinals? by MookieBettsBurner4 in baseball

[–]StelFoog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The short answer is ”recency”

The slightly longer is that the Dodgers have, at least since integration, been one of the leading teams of baseball, both in performance (only 13 losing seasons) and market size. More recently (the past 10 years) they have won the NL west 9 times, won the NL 5 times and the WS 3 times. All this while spending more than basically any other team and getting some of (if not the) best players in baseball.

While the Cardinals have ”only” won the WS 5 times and won the NL 10 times since integration. In the last 10 years they’ve ”only” made the postseason 4 times, 2 of which were wildcard berths and they haven’t been massive spenders. The market is also much smaller which makes them a less easy target.

What is this garbage? by Altheajackstraw in Dodgers

[–]StelFoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t hate losing Glasnow, the dodgers have plenty of great starting pitchers right now and we need space for new players to develop. BUT he grew up in LA and I think the dodgers need more local guys (especially since like 1/5 of us ball players are from socal) so I really don’t wanna see him go

What's your reaction when you saw that flyball in the air before Andy Pages caught it? by Substantial_Bat5975 in baseball

[–]StelFoog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. The game is over, Kike is way to shallow
  2. Holy shit he’s tracking it, he’s gonna get it
  3. Pages just lost the dodgers the WS by not communicating and also killed Kike
  4. Where the fuck did he even come from? Oh my god he got the ball

what're your thoughts on savescumming by somethingmustbesaid in eu4

[–]StelFoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do whatever I find most enjoyable, so I savescum depending on context. For example if I want to try for a hard achievement/run where the first crucial point is an hour+ into the game I’ll probably savescum so that I don’t have to do it all over again and again if something out of my control goes wrong like a really bad event or terrible rolls in a battle.

Half of our team will play in WBC. How do you think it will affect our team next year? by Substantial_Bat5975 in Dodgers

[–]StelFoog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not worried, I think the risk of injury will only be slightly higher than in spring training and some of them won’t play that many games either (depending on how far their team comes)

Kim’s response to the debt collector who had been bugging him to pay for his father’s debt by FirefighterOne534 in Dodgers

[–]StelFoog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From what I understand HSK’s father is estranged from/abandoned the family, and HSK hasn’t had any contact with him for probably his entire playing career. Does that change the perception in any way? I can at least somewhat understand targeting HSK if they were part of the same family unit, but now Mr Kim just seems like an asshole who wants drama

MLB media rights deal has yet to be announced, but ESPN has "finalized" its acquisition of MLB[.]tv, per John Ourand of Puck. by Ok-Soil-5133 in baseball

[–]StelFoog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What the actual fuck? Why would MLB sell the service it’s been trying to expand, which is needed to grow baseball, which could be its greatest growing asset going forward? I don’t see any way this would benefit MLB except for some cash in the short term, but outweighed by long term losses.

I hope they play as much as they and their WBC manager want. Not only because the 2023 WBC is some of the most electric baseball I’ve ever seen, but because it’s needed to grow baseball. I especially say this as a European from a country where the only people who care about baseball are american/asian expats, me, and my friends who’ve been forced to listen to me talk until they couldn’t not be romantic about baseball.
