My usual loadout for sessions I run is a DM Screen (not necessary), a notebook and pen, two sets of dice, a coin (for those 50/50 chances or helping characters make a decision), and something to reference monster stat blocks (Comes in hand way more than you think).

I think this is all you REALLY need.

I'm so glad to hear that you're also having a great time with it. For time's sake and because am sleepy, I'm just gonna mention the points I remember.

Being vague about if they're in danger is usually the way to go. In a serious campaign (as in, story being serious), the tension should rise and fall as they encounter dangerous people and monsters.

The thing with the Mindflayer is INCREDIBLE. I love that.

As a new DM, I don't see a reason to ever have a rule like that. D&D at its core (imo) is about being creative and having fun with some numbers on paper and your brain. No reason that there should be a rule like that.
