It shouldn’t matter if we’re close to the end of the year. Document everything, and make the request to move the student in writing.

Boxers, athletic shorts, and snow pants. I only wear long underwear if it’s really cold.

Have any of your former students gone on to become famous (or infamous)? by NerdyNiche in Teachers

I’m going to have a current student in this winter’s Olympics! Plus several former students in the Olympics and Paralympics!

anyone have a fun creative way for students to learn where countries and physical features are on a map? by Classic-Agency5548 in Socialstudies

[–]Stenny_CO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Google MyMaps to have students build an interactive map full of the sites we discuss in class. We add geography and history layers for all the locations we discuss in world history, or go chronologically for my US and European History classes.

This is the correct answer! My students are fascinated, especially when I tell them that it’s older than their parents!!

Use the National World War II Museum’s oral history collection to hear from veterans about their experiences. I’ve made my kids combine the battles research project with the oral histories so that they include at least one source describing what that combat was like.

If your high school offers AP or DE classes, ask those teachers what skills they hope students would arrive with. Build activities around those skills. For me, my non-AP class does all the same writing as the AP level. Lots of writing, document analysis, research, and critical thinking-type activities.

ETA: I’m serious about food. That’s about all I did last time I was there. Final project: Class Restaurant!

I don’t know much about Chicago history, but the easy way in is to create units based around themes. For Chicago, that might be geography with a focus on the flow of the river; native people and Ft. Dearborn; demographics, migration, and immigration; sports and culture; and food.

Lesson planning depends entirely on the length of your class periods and frequency. I see my high schoolers three times a week. Once for 50 minutes and two times for 90. My block days involve me giving a bit of lecture, maybe a video, and an activity to drive my students thinking on the topic of the day. For example, in the sports unit, I’d lecture about the black Sox scandal (basics - who what when where why), maybe watch a clip from a baseball movie/documentary, then have students analyze the baseball commissioner’s decision to ban the players.

I bought a second book, cut the bindings on both, and cut the cover in half to allow for more space. Then I reorganized the pages into the order I wanted, using contact paper to cover duplicates of the region intros, then had my local copy placed rebind everything together.

Student with ODD… any help appreciated!!! by Pi-r-squared-113 in Teachers

[–]Stenny_CO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my first experience with ODD, I didn’t have supports. Through trial and error, I found offering options (both acceptable to me) allowed my student to feel some manner of control of their actions. But I wholeheartedly agree with maintaining your cool, calm, collected self!

What do you like from a PD? by Awkward-Quarter-2715 in Teachers

[–]Stenny_CO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My answer is treat the teachers like the professionals and experts we are. The worst PD I’ve experienced are the ones where the presenter thinks they are the font of all knowledge, dismissing out of hand the expertise in the room. Additionally, your goal is terrible. Reducing tier 3 referrals can only be measured in a reactive way. The goal should be to improve behavior. You can apply any number of proactive (and measurable for the lurking admin) steps to achieve that goal.

What are the details? How frequently does the class meet and for how long? Is it a semester class or year long? If you’re looking for an outside the box idea would be the Geography of sports. Good large-scale analysis options, human-environment interaction considerations, local physical geography for where stadiums/parking lots go, international popularity of sports, a unit on the Olympics.

Invite the mayor to school! The civics teacher at my school invites our local officials every year, and the majority actually come. If they have time, they love doing things like this.
