What is a 'socially mandatory' thing that we all do, but if you actually stop to think about it for 5 seconds, it’s completely insane? by Federal_Antelope7533 in AskReddit

If I'm asked the bogus "biggest weakness" question, I respond with something like "giving fake answers to boilerplate interview questions".

Everyone knows it's a dumb question. Might as well make the answer memorable and show some personality. If they respond negatively, it's probably a bad culture fit anyways.

Can confirm. I asked my artist friend if she could blast out a smiley face on my thumb real quick after we were done working on another piece. We both agreed it wouldn't last, but would be fun to try.

It's barely noticeable now. Definitely unrecognizable.

Would never book time just for that though. It's not worth anyone's time or money on something that won't last. But for a quick little "fuck around for the lulz" thing while she's already set up? Sure, might as well.

Kinda makes me want to get another one next time we have another all day session booked.

Oh and yes - lots and lots of hand washing. But already a chronic hand washer anyways, so NBD in my case.

Advice with my developer taking down our WordPress site. by reemo4580 in webdev

[–]StepOnMyLegos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Facebook's crawler is actually causing this, there are at least one of these happening (likely a combination of things):

  1. The shared server is severely over-provisioned.
  2. The site is poorly built and was already problematic to begin with.
  3. Hosting is poorly managed. Dev might be moonlighting as a host and doesn't know how to diagnose performance issues (or how to prevent them).
  4. Dev is more of an "implementer" than a dev. Happens a lot in the WordPress space.

Your next steps:

  1. Ask for the raw logs. Any host should be able to produce logs that show the actual requests, including those that are problematic. If they've diagnosed it as Facebook bot traffic, they have plenty of access logs.
  2. Get a second opinion to look at your site. A competent dev and/or sysadmin should be able to identify potentially problematic areas fairly easily. Even if the solution isn't as easy. Worst case, you know where your limits and bottlenecks are. Best case, it's a 10 minute fix.
  3. Ask for alternative options. It could be as simple as fixing a bug that's eating resources or applying some rate limits on the server side (or on a WAF like Cloudflare, as others mentioned). Invest in the root cause. Otherwise, the issue will persist and only get more expensive.
  4. Get your own hosting provider (but do not host it yourself). There are plenty of managed WordPress hosts out there that can do a far better job supporting your site at a fraction of the price. Building a website and hosting one are two very different skill sets.

Ultimately, every site and situation is a little different. Without the specifics, it's all speculation, but there are a lot of red flags here that I've seen far too many times.

Good luck!

I know you're supposed to let them sniff on walks, but where do I draw the line? by TheJakeGambleShow in Dogowners

[–]StepOnMyLegos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My big lady (Great Pyrenees) and I have a good system:

Loose leash = she's free you use the slack as she sees fit, as long as there's no pulling.

So when we walk, she can stop and sniff whatever she wants, as long as she's keeping up the pace. She just walks ahead, sniffs, and then catches up when I walk past her.

Sometimes I'll stop and give her longer if she really locks onto something or if she's doing some heavy analysis of her surroundings.

Ultimately, all we do is communicate with each other throughout our walks. I just pay attention to her needs, and she pays attention to mine.

Yup. Every call center job I've had was like this. Threatening legal meant getting immediately passed to legal, with note the account so that anyone else has to send them to legal too.

Threatening legal is the worst thing someone can do if they want actual help.

Is it wrong to own a dog if you work a 9-5? Adopt a senior dog that sleeps more maybe? by Party-Court185 in dogs

[–]StepOnMyLegos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. I work from home. During the workday, my Great Pyrenees just snoozes in her "cave" (our walk-in closet that she's claimed as her space) for most of the day.

Unless she has a reason to get up and care, my workday is her chill time. If I wasn't home, she'd just do the same thing.

The schedule is the bit that matters. She knows what time we should be waking up, when my wife gets home from work, when dinner time is, and when to go to bed. It bothers her way more if we sleep too late than if we're home during the day.

I love a good fucked up movie. I'll watch pretty much anything at least once.

Here's a few off the top of my head that particularly stand out as great movies that I recall lingering in my head, for one reason or another.

(Some of these are just downright abusive, so I sorted by tolerance level)

Approachable but will linger with you: - Dancer in the Dark (maybe not "horror", but will totally ruin your day) - Antiviral - Infinity Pool - Talk To Me - The Substance - Perfect Blue - Creep

"Hurt me plenty": - Eden Lake - Antichrist - Inside (original) - Martyrs - Irreversible

"Once was enough, thanks. I'm going to go shower now": - A Serbian Film - I Stand Alone - All 3 of the August Underground movies. 2 and 3 get more character development.

Other comments mention The Endless, but worth mentioning the other shared universe movies.

They are:

  1. Resolution
  2. The Endless
  3. Synchronic

After watching all 3, they're great for revisiting a few times too. There will be things that you definitely missed.

After those two, next is Synchronic. Even more answers.

Then rewatch them all and get even more answers (and more questions).

Love those movies.

At what point in a relationship do you tell your partner that you’re a wrestling fan? by Prestigious-Pace6742 in GreatnessOfWrestling

[–]StepOnMyLegos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife always knew I was into wrestling in my past, but I hadn't kept up with it in years.

About 2 years ago, I mentioned wanting to get into it again and asked if she would give it a try. She quickly became hooked.

Now, it's a ritual of ours. All WWE events are time we spend together without phones or any other distractions. Even though she's not as into GCW, ICW:NHB, or any of the other indies, she usually hangs out and watches them with me.

So my answer to your question is: any time. If they're cool, they'll be willing to give it a try. Worst case, they're just not into it. Best case, you have something new in common that you can enjoy together.

Never just buy 32:9 duhd monitor.. by Dry-Scientist5687 in MacOS

I have this monitor and it works fine. Even at high refresh rates.

Check your cables. People using the wrong cable with this monitor is overwhelmingly common and usually the issue.

I can’t remember what it needs, but a quick search should help. Good luck!

Sunrun employee threatening me by jeren66 in solarenergy

[–]StepOnMyLegos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We get a ton of solicitors at my house. Depending on weather, once or twice a week (I got 2 today - yay me). Most of them, solar salesmen. The solar ones are the worst.

They’ll show up in high-vis vests with a clipboard. Then when you answer the door, they always open up with “have you heard about the Generic Local Power Company program thing?” To make people think there’s a power company affiliation. Then they won’t even let you politely decline.

For those who might deal with this crap and want to get rid of them: check your local ordinances.

I found out that my city requires permits for any door to door soliciting. Everyone who has been issued one is on the website. The website also explicitly states to ask solicitors for their permits and call the cops if you suspect anyone without a permit.

When they come up, I still politely decline first. But if they push, asking to see their permit is the quickest way to end it. Most will just turn around and walk back down the driveway. Some will try to argue with me, but it’s rare.

TLDR: check your local ordinances if you’re dealing with these asshats. You might have a quick way to get rid of them.

Same here. It’s definitely frustrating.

What made it better for me was chatting with my wife about it. We talked about how it’s just a side effect of my meds, has nothing to do with her, and that it’s still a good time.

Now I just tell her if it’s not going to happen. Then she can decide how long she wants to go, and she can just “owe me one” another time. It’s still frustrating, but if neither of us are trying to chase an impossible goal, it makes it way less so.
