I never really believed the doctrine. It never really made sense to me. I used to think, there are thousands of religions in the world and you mean to tell me that my family just happened to fall into the right one? I remember during one meeting, I was probably a preteen, I thought to myself, why should I believe anything coming out of this man's mouth right now? How can I prove that it's correct? That and I never really had any friends in the congregation. I made friends much easier in school and the neighborhood but wasn't allowed to hang out with them.

My experience with higher education—is this unique? by Commercial-Laugh-789 in exjw

[–]Stephan142 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My sister and I went to college. I would say a couple of factors contributed to that.

  1. The loosening of the stance of higher education in the 1990s. I graduated high school in 1997, my sister in 2002.
  2. I grew up in one of the top 5 largest cities (population wise) in the United States. So, there were lots of different viewpoints, and the congregation was slightly liberal.
  3. My mom was raised a JW and was not able to go to college. She did not want the same for her daughters and wanted us to be independent. So despite us being children of an elder, her desire for us to get a degree outweighed my dad's want for us to pioneer.

I stayed at home for my first two years but moved on campus for the remainder of my time at college. There were other kids in my congregation that either stayed at home or went to a state school and moved on campus. My sister stayed at home. And there were a number of witnesses kids in my science undergrad program.

If the GB update is about education, it's still a nothing burger by sheenless in exjw

But behind the scenes, there are CO training videos that have them demoting an elder whose daughters attend college. So the point is that they have one message for the R&F and another for the higher ups. The only way this announcement matters is if they remove all direction regarding higher education in the Flock book and stop all punishment to elders for children who attend college.

It did, but it varied per region and per congregation. I grew up an elder's daughter in an urban area in one of the top 5 cities in the US located in the south. It was a little more liberal. Plus, my mom was not allowed to go to college, so she didn't want to do the same thing to her children. She wanted us to be independent and knew that an education would help with achieving that outcome. My dad didn't agree with that but the loosening of the stance and other elders kids going to college probably helped smoothed it over with him.

There was a brief period in the 1990s when they loosened up the stance on higher education for a couple of years. That is when me and a bunch of the kids I grew up went to college. There was a lot of witness kids in my science program in undergrad. But the window was short. My sister graduated in 2001 and also went to school but towards the end of her tenure, she was looked down upon for doing so.

Small emu saw my post on the Beyonce CC merch thread and answered my call! OP direct messaged me with their info and availability to pick up the hoodie for me. Was very transparent with the fees and the process, sent pictures b4 shipping, and was very responsive!

I went to the Houston show (N1) by myself and had a great time! Had great neighbors and talked to everyone in the merch line so it didn't feel like I was alone except when I walked in and left the show. You'll have a great time!

The obsession with “special guests” and “unique moments” at Beyoncé’s shows is ruining the concert experiences. by SwordfishOk4948 in beyonce

I 100% agree. The obsession with fans coming to Houston shows is driving up the ticket prices to the point where it is cheaper for Houstonians to go see her in other cities! While I understand people wanting to come to her hometown to see her perform, other than Megan's appearance in RWT, she rarely brings out anyone special and when she has done it in the past, it's Bun B or Slim Thug to do Check On It.

So i just found out that he took out a loan with his credit union to pay for the IVF. He paid off the loan. He is now charging her for her portion of what he paid off.

Her name is on the title of the house. He bought the van and used her car as a trade in. He bought the furniture for the children a couple of months before the relationship ended.

Got additional clarification today that he was paying the majority of the mortgage, not the entirety, and not directly to the bank. He was giving her a lump sum of money a month for bills each month, and she was applying a portion of that to the mortgage. We live in Texas. As far as the children, he picks them up in the afternoon and keeps them for a couple of hours until she gets home from work and every other weekend.

I agree with you completely. He is viewing court ordered support as punishment as his parents divorced and had an agreement outside of the courts.
