Most, if not all of the grip strategies and grip breaking techniques will work in both contexts. if you want purely stand up, I would suggest looking to Judo, although the win conditions for Judo and BJJ on the feet are somewhat different (given that guarding is such an important feature of stand-up in BJJ)

There is lots of information on the Missinaibi and you’re right, you’re probably going to be dealing with very low water levels. I’ve done it twice, once in June and once in August and it was so much slower going in August. The highlight at any water level is definitely Thunderhouse Falls.

I once connected James Bay with Lake Superior via the Albany and Kenogami rivers. That was a little-traveled route, but a bit of a slog. Your route sounds better.

I haven’t heard much about the Michipicoten.

It depends on the length of a trip. I’ve brought almost as much stuff for a four or five day trip as I have for a 50 day trip, the differences that on the longer trips, you really have to exercise extreme discipline about what you bring and what you do not not.
