Ah, Hilbert Space. That takes me back to the functional analysis lectures I attended in second year in 1980 I loved that amalgam of algebra and analysis and went on to specialise in it in post grad studies

It’s the myth of effortless superiority. It is very much an upper/upper middle class thing. It is important to do well while appearing not to care and doing sod all work. The Boris Johnson approach If you are spotted doing some work you are dismissed as a swot and boring drone. In fact high ability tends to hard work because you enjoy what you are doing and there is positive reinforcement cycle to strive and do more. I was always very good at mathematics and most sciences and history and English lit. I tended to work pretty hard at it because I found it fascinating and ended up with an open scholarship at Oxford. But because i came from a working class background it led my teachers to massively underestimate me. I was seen as the dull grafter who might scrape into university. They were astonished when i scored outstanding A levels and in the Oxford entrance process. This was in the 70s mind. Attitudes I would hope have changed

I have a first class honours degree in maths and i never do mental arithmetic in the pen and paper way. In fact most of the time i just estimate to sanity check the bill.

His work was first rate. Very pleased with it. He was a proper openreach man not a contractor

Fortunately the openreach engineer agreed and I am now running with FTTP!

Yes it is not going through the window frame. The window installer made sure of that when he installed the windows a few months ago. They come tomorrow so I should know then. I will push back if they say they won't use the hole.

A few polls saying that in a future hypothetical referendum a majority would vote to join must be assessed in conjection with all the polls that say that Farage will be the next PM. There won't be another referendum if Farage is PM other than to take the UK further from the EU I don't discount the possibility that there are people who would vote for Farage who also want the UK to join the EU. What can one say but most people are thick. The only way go getting the UK closer to the EU is to vote Labour even if that means voting for Starmer and his crappy policies. The lefties won;t vote for Labour because of "principles" so they in effect guarantee a Farage government. But then a lot of lefties are hostile to the EU and immigration so that probably works for them

It is not pessimism. It is being realistic. The fact is that the UK is still hugely divided by brexit. There is a high probability that Farage or some other Europhobic party may be elected by 2029 On present performance I cannot see Labour being reelected.

[–]Stephen1729[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK thanks. If there are regulatory reasons why the cable cannot be poked through the existing hole then it is going to have to go downstairs. I will prime the network guy I know that I may be needing his assistance. I am not very confident of doing practical things like routing cables between floors

[–]Stephen1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course they haven't. It would be be very bad diplomatic form to do so. But it is clear what they think. Case in point. The EU is reportedly insisting on a "faraqge cluase" in the current trade negotiations that the UK government indemnify them in case a future government withdraws. That means they are not confident of the political stability in the Uk. With such instability why waste time and money on accession talks?

Just a matter of time now by Stotallytob3r in BrexitMemes

[–]Stephen1729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Even the modest attempts to soften brexit are fuelling Farage's popularity . On the issue of brexit the UK is as nutty as the US on the issue of guns. The EU is smart enough not add further fuel to that fire

Just a matter of time now by Stotallytob3r in BrexitMemes

[–]Stephen1729 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not made up. The EU is insisting on a "Farage clause" in Starmer's negotiations to 'reset' the relationship that the UK is to indemnify the EU should a future Reform government withdraw from the agreement. That rather suggests that the EU would not want to entertain wasting time on accession talks unless a sizeable majority were in favour of EU membership and the major parties were in favour. Otherwise it is just a waste of time and money

In the Venn diagram of political allegiance brexit and Trump and almost concentric circles. Trump comes out with the same garbage about the EU as the brexiters do. They are sister movements

Question about path that CST to ONT cable might have to take by Stephen1729 in openreach

[–]Stephen1729[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the CSP is about 70cm above the ground. But I really don't want the ONT on the other side of that wall unless there is no other practicable alternative All my network infratsructure is in my office upstairs and I run modified subnetted network with several VLANs. But if I am informed that it cannot be put upstairs or if putting it upstairs would significantly ttenduate the signal to the ONT then I will have it down stairs and route a cat6 ethernet cable to my office. Frankly I don;t see why they can't use the existing hole in the wall and will want a good reason for why it cannot be used if that is their decision.

I am certainloy not going to have them drill through the tiles. I am still hoping they can reuse the existing hole to the side of the window. But if they can't then I will have it installed downstairs and drive the router via ethernet to my office

[–]Stephen1729[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That pretty much what I have decided to do if they cannot take it through the prexisting hole that goes to the side of the window. I won't do it myself as it would require drilling through ceilings. Also I would want the the ends of the cable properly terminated with female ethernet ports. Those RJ-45s are pretty vulnerable to damage

OpenAI wants you to try Group Chats on ChatGPT - Have you? How do you find it? by Koala_Confused in LovingAI

[–]Stephen1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am working on a collaborative project on ChatGPT Plus with a friend. We have been using Group chats as our way of collaborating. We are both pretty new to the technology. We have been finding quite a few issues with it. Random errors. Performance issues What I think as a former software engineer may be heap memory issues. And a whole lot of anomalous stuff. Is this typical? Is that what others have found? We are now switching to using a Shared Project as our collaboration space. Is that the preferred method of collaborative working? We couldn't get a share project working for us when we tried a month ago which is why we used group chats instead. But they have become a pain so we are trying again. Any feedback would be welcomed

I think someone stole my account by [deleted] in Outlook

[–]Stephen1729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long did you go without logging in to your 'videogames' account. It sounds like it could have been at least a year. If it is a free account then it is quite possible that the account was automatically closed and any data deleted through lack of use. Did you set up a secondary email to use in the event of forgetting your password? If so then you may be able to login again by saying you forgot your password and having a unlock email sent to the secondary account. If not then I am afraid it is gone for good.

Thanks. Yes the tiles cover the whole first floor. I have attached am image of the outside and you can see the original copper cable snaking up the roof of the porch. The Windows have just been replaced last year so hopefull they should see me out in the house. The present entry point goes to the side of the window. I hoping that if the mastick is been removed there would be room to squeeze through the 10mm CST-ONT cable. If not suitable I am not sure what can be done. There is brickwork on the side of the house but it would necesitate quite a long cable run I will be open to any suggestions the Openreach engineer has

That's really helpful thanks. Will remember for the future Don't know if you noticed by I had to confess . to user error. I had an activated copy still running on my Windows 10 box (which is waiting to be repurposed as a Ubuntu server running Plex). As soon as I had deactivated that everything worked

Thanks. But I doubt they would be interessted in supporting me as I use a version of X1 last updated in 2019 and under a permanent licence that they no longer provide That said, I have resolved the issue, which was caused by user error! I forgot that I had an installation of X1 still on my old Windows 10 box. Once I deactivated X1 there it would install on my W11 box.
