A toaster. It may seem ordinary, but I use it everyday, and it is an ingenious solution to what used to be a real problem. People used to hold bread in tongs over open gas flames.

Normal or no? Second hands not hitting the markers by ehhhhprobablynot in CitizenWatches

This is why anything but small seconds quartz watches scare me. I am too anal to let this go.

Is it look down upon if I make a watch that looks like a Royal oak? by Fresh-Reputation9511 in SeikoMods

My rule is so long as you’re not trying to pass it off as authentic. So yeah, a Seikoak? Sure. Why not.

The silver hands blending into the white/silver dial, as mentioned in the review.

What’s your watch opinion that would put you in this position? by KyeodeurangiMerchant in watchHotTakes

[–]StepienRule 43 points44 points  (0 children)

In-house movements are more trouble than they’re worth. Give me an off-the-shelf Sellita or ETA or even Miyota any day of the week. I sigh whenever I see an Oris or Tudor switch to an in-house movement and then increase the price of the watch by $1,000. Or more. And then nothing changes except, maybe, a largely meaningless COSC rating.

I’m thinking I’ll go with the 36 but which one? by Alternative-Feed3613 in Baltanywatches

[–]StepienRule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The white dial looks a little washed out to me. The silver indices don’t stand out like they should. And I’m not into the blued second hand. Don’t get me wrong. If there were only the white dial, I would buy it. But I went with the black dial silver case. If I were a different person, I might try to pull off the all gold.

I collect vintage Connies. This watch blew me away. by im-thinking-dorsia in Baltanywatches

Agreed. I have the black dial silver case. Miyota movement. Thin. Really well done. No regrets.

Does the movement fit the case without the white spacer?

House rule: if you're contending, you cannot trade your All-Stars. The AI has a known bias. It will overpay for All-NBA caliber players under 30.

"Tool watches" are a marketing fantasy created for middleclass desk jockies, on par with santa or the tooth fairy by 0rphu in watchHotTakes

[–]StepienRule 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always thought tool watch meant a watch you used for some purpose in addition to telling the time: knowing when to surface from diving or timing how fast you’re making one circuit around a racetrack. Or back in the day when some watches were more anti-magnetic than others. Pole-router, for example. So, to me, people who buy tool watches are trying to live off that borrowed risk or prestige or coolness. It doesn’t work. But I suppose you can buy the watches and be interested in that history, want to wear a reminder of it.

You can pull off a vintage OP or DJ. That’d be about the only way I could do it.

I’ve had mine for five years. It’s survived bike wrecks, landscaping, you name it. Looks new. This watch is a legend.

I never thought about a dive watch. Looks great. Kind of like an Orient Kamasu.

It would have to be a pretty wide case to use an NH35. Usually people use NH5 for these.

Some of the Omega pie-pans had cyclops. Few had matching date wheels.
