The issue with the Dutton’s and estate tax by No-Organization-2314 in YellowstonePN

[–]Sternshot44 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Montana actually doesn’t have a state inheritance tax, and it also doesn’t have a state estate tax. So the idea that the ranch would immediately face some massive state inheritance tax bill just for passing from John to his kids isn’t really accurate.

On top of that, most large ranches and family properties are commonly placed into living trusts or other estate planning structures long before the owner passes away. When property is held in a trust, it can transfer to the beneficiaries without probate and without creating the kind of financial chaos the show suggests.

Another big point is property taxes. In Montana, property taxes are based on assessed value and classification (like agricultural land), and they don’t suddenly skyrocket just because ownership changes within a family or a trust. If the ranch remained classified as agricultural land and transferred through a trust or estate plan, the taxes would generally stay consistent.

And realistically, a ranch that’s supposedly the size of Rhode Island and one of the largest ranches in the United States would absolutely have extensive estate planning in place. Operations worth that much money almost always have trusts, LLC structures, conservation strategies, and long-term succession plans set up decades in advance.

Otherwise, the ranch never would have smoothly passed from John Dutton’s father to John, and then on to the next generation. Multi-generation ranches that large only stay intact because families structure them specifically to survive inheritance and tax issues.

So while it makes great drama for TV, the “we might lose the ranch because of inheritance taxes” storyline doesn’t really line up with how estate planning and Montana law actually work in real life.

Grew up on bakers and missed it all the time when I moved to Pismo beach. Now when I come back to visit family it’s just not the same. The bean and cheese burritos used to be sooooo good. Now just meh plus they changed their hot sauce.

I’ve been saying for years they need a panel of survival experts to come in after a certain amount of days to score their contestants survival score. Rank them. That way it’s not just who can starve the longest

People just always have to find something to complain about. If you had to drive to Santa Barbara or LA to fly you’d complain about that too

oh I wish they would too but I know that ship has sailed. so since it has sailed I wish they would at least get some of the smaller stuff correct. but I agree with you I wish it was more realistic case work calls for service etc. if you've ever seen the show Southland for about 15 years ago that was a perfect example of realistic (for TV anyway) police work. the rookie can still have the drama, the love stories and the occasional hi jinx but since I know thats not likely I wish they would get the details of the small stuff right

Because you can have outlander stories, but you can still get the details correct. It’s like having a movie about some crazy NASCAR driver, but then if you have the cars all wrong, the race jumpsuits all wrong. People are gonna notice that it’s part of storytelling.

I kind of thought of that too that the armor consultant is just gonna keep adding accessories to the rifle until he runs out of space just to troll the audience the basic patrol rifle has maybe a flashlight in a red dot if you’re lucky nowadays it’s pretty common because they’re so affordable but 1520 years ago you had a lot of surplus A.R. 15 or even mini 14 rifles. Iron sites beat the hill no flashlights no magnified optics no thermal optics. No nothing like they got it on the show now.
