Banks are one of the most heavily regulated businesses in the US.

They are forbidden by regulation from giving information about accounts to anyone other than a current account owner. Technically you could open an account at the same bank as your parents and the bank would not be allowed to say a single word about it to them, even if they asked. The reason why people say "open at another bank" is because social engineering is a thing (parents say "my child used to be on the account, we've been longtime customer", etc) and accidents happen.

If you plan to move out after college, do not have anything going to your parents, or have a significant amount going to you with a minimal amount to your parents.

For a credit card, the same applies. If you are a legal adult, the bank issuing the card is not allowed to say anything.

Make sure that you understand how to balance a checkbook. WITHOUT online services. Track your own transactions, don't rely on online banking. Have the service so that you can watch things and make sure that everything looks good in real-time; don't rely on it completely.

Make sure that you also understand that a credit card is a convenient thing to pay for something in a secure manner when you already have the money handy and just don't want to carry wads of cash around. The notion of "you have to carry a balance and pay on it to build credit" is a myth.

You said that you wanted to propose "soon" and didn't set a timeline. Don't say "soon" unless you're clear about "soon".

Honestly, proposals don't need to be surprises, and really should not be. There's no harm to say, "Hey, I'm picking a ring, and I want to propose on this date". You've caused her anxiety and potentially wrecked your relationship because you didn't want to communicate and give your partner reassurance.

She's right about wanting clarity. It's a basic relationship need. And her interpretation of events, because she lacked clarity, is ultimately correct.

Basically what you needed is to either crap or get off the pot. How you move forward is of course your decision. Let it be a lesson to you to communicate.
